Minority jobseekers struggle in COVID job market.
MCST was recently covered in an article on the migrant job crises in New Zealand Herald. Excerpts from the article are below.
It was hard for migrants to find work even before Covid, says Garry Gupta of the Migrant Careers Support Trust, a non-profit that offers career advice, workshops and networking events to ethnic and migrant jobseekers.
There is no overt racism here, he says, pointing to "a certain mindset" of businesses to hire their own kind, and "perhaps a lack of confidence that migrants can deliver".
"I used to get very nice rejection letters," Gupta says of his own experience in the marketing industry, which prompted him to start the trust to help others like him.
"But I got so many they made me think, if I'm so good why don't you give me a chance?

Shailan spoke on how the new technology is changing the way we work in offices in general and in the accounting sector in specific. He gave a peak on the MYOB software and its uses for accountants and how to kickstart a career in it.

Financial support for foreign nationals in New Zealand
While restrictions are easing within the country we know that international travel is still very restricted. It’s meant real difficulties for some people here on temporary visas who cannot easily get home. Support remains available for people in this situation who are experiencing serious financial hardship. The Red Cross and the Department of Internal Affairs are running the Visitor Care Manaaki Manuhiri programme which delivers assistance to help people on temporary visas meet basic needs, such as food, accommodation, and medical care. More information on what people are eligible for can be found on the COVID-19 website. I’ve heard stories of people who do not like to ask for help or are worried about being forced out of the country if they come forward. I can understand this but these are exceptional circumstances and the support available is genuine. So please share this with the communities you work with and represent. If people do need help it’s there for them.
The Minister for Immigration recently announced some short-term changes to visa settings to help visitors and other temporary migrants remain in New Zealand lawfully while they arrange travel home. The changes are:
Automatically extending current onshore visitor visas that are due to expire before the end of October 2020 for five-months
Introducing a new two-month COVID-19 short-term visitor visa to help temporary migrants who are unable to leave New Zealand due to international travel restrictions when their current visa expires.
In addition, the Minister has announced two new updates on immigration. The first is a new border exception category to enable the return of some temporary work visa holders who are overseas and have strong, ongoing links to New Zealand. More details are available in the Minister’s statement. He also issued information on changes to current border exception rules to allow some partners of New Zealand citizens and residents to be able to reunite in New Zealand. This includes citizens of visa waiver countries. More information is available on the beehive website. It’s good to have confirmation on these issues and I hope this will relieve some of the worries that members of our communities will have gone through.

Early return to work while on parental leave.
During uncertain times, employees who are on parental leave may face financial difficulty and want to return to work earlier than planned.
In response, employers need to act in good faith and be as flexible as possible, to make sure that an employee’s early return benefits both parties. While an employee is on parental leave and may be receiving parental leave payments, it is important to specify whether the employee’s return to work is temporary or permanent.
What is mediation? Mediation is where an independent person called a mediator helps an employee and an employer resolve an employment relationship problem in a semi-formal and confidential environment.
Mediation is voluntary. However, participation in mediation can be seen as part of the good-faith duties of an employment relationship. If you choose not to take part, the other party might be able to take their complaint to the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) which can require you to attend mediation.
Voting in the 2020 General Election and referendums starts Saturday 3 October.
Voting will be different this year because of COVID-19. There will be safety measures such as physical distancing and hand sanitiser at voting places. There are things you can do before you go to vote to help protect your whānau and community when you vote. Before you leave home get ready to vote:
Make sure you are enrolled to vote, you can do this online at vote.nz. Bring your EasyVote card to make voting quicker.
You can vote early to avoid the queues. Voting places are open from Saturday 3 October right up until 7pm on Saturday 17 October.
You can vote close to home. It will be quicker and easier. Find your nearest voting place at vote.nz or call 0800 36 76 56.
You can bring your own pen but if you forget there will be pens available.
What to expect at your local voting place:
There will be hand sanitiser available at all voting places, you can use when you enter and when you leave.
Physical distancing will be practised, and there will be on hand to help make sure everyone is safe.
Face masks will be available at voting places if you need one.
