The piña colada is the perfect mix of all things tropical: tangy pineapple juice, rich coconut cream and of course, the staple rum (or not if you prefer a refreshing virgin cocktail.) But how much do you really know about the birthplace of this summer staple that inspired a hit pop song featured in many films over several decades? Invented at Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the piña colada dates back to 1954 when the hotel’s bartender, Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, created a special cocktail blending rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice.
