The workshop conducted from 8-11 Dec saw 30 participants coming for 4 days and interacted with 11 speakers and industry specialists.

The minimum wage is increasing – make sure you are prepared

The Government confirmed on 17th December 2020 that the adult minimum wage will increase, from $18.90 to $20.00 per hour on 1 April 2021.

This year, Waitangi Day falls on Saturday 6 February and is observed on that day or Monday 8 February. Employment New Zealand has put together seven top employment tips employers and employees need to know about their employment obligations for Waitangi Day.

0-Day trials and notice periods

A recent ruling by the Employment Relations Authority (Berea v Best Health Foods Ltd) is a good reminder that employers must follow proper process and give employees notice as part of a 90-day trial period.

In this case study, the employer must pay the employee for lost wages and $12,000 for distress after dismissing them abruptly without notice on their first day.

Have your say on changes to sick leave entitlements

The Government has introduced the Holidays (Increasing Sick Leave) Amendment Bill to increase the minimum employee sick leave entitlement from 5 days per year to 10 days per year. The Bill will come into effect two months after it’s passed as a law. The Education and Workforce Committee is asking for public submissions on the Bill and the closing date for submissions is Thursday, 28 January 2021.
