Register now for soccer in the fall!

What's happening

Fall soccer

Over 1000 players have registered in the last 3 weeks, so don't delay. For 16U, please sign up for the wait list at no cost. New teams will be created as soon as enough players have registered. Register now for fall soccer.

Volunteers

AYSO means volunteering. If there are 9 players on a team, and each team needs two coaches, two referees, and a team manager, then that means you are probably doing one of those jobs. If you coach for 2 (or 3) teams, we'll make the practice and game schedule work for you. Apply to volunteer and authorize a background check when you register your child. Coach and referee classes are in July-August.

Balanced teams

Games are more fun when the teams have similar abilities. For 10U and above, Region 13 tries to make sure that the players on every team have a similar range of ages, skill, and experience. Look for an email from your Division Coach Administrator about team formation.

"Laws Of The Game" game - aka the LOTG game

What's the call? Get the LOTG app and follow along!

1. In order to confuse the Blue team, Green #6 takes a goal kick with a backwards flick. The kick goes right into the Green goal. Oops. The play succeeded, as the other team is indeed confused. Unfortunately, so is the referee. How does play resume?

2. Red #3 kicks the ball, which ricochets off the referee and goes out of play. The referee is startled, but unharmed. How does play resume?

3. In their own defensive half of the field, a very skilled Purple player takes a dropped ball. She dribbles it all the way down the field, through the Yellow players, and drills it into the back of the Yellow team’s net. How does play resume?

Take your best guess, volunteer to become a referee, and scroll down for the answers.

Superhero of the month

Terry Takahashi is Dad and coach to two soccer players. Starting this year, he's also serving Region 13 as your Regional Coach Administrator, coordinating the coaching staff. Terry says, "Coaching is a great way to get involved in your kid’s lives; a chance to watch them grow as they learn not only about soccer, but about teamwork, the importance of hard work, and how to deal with successes and challenges on and off the field. It can be exciting, difficult, surprising, frustrating, rewarding and most of all fun - sometimes at the same time. What better way to spend a Saturday than coaching soccer with your kids?"

Region 13 Rocks!

After a short 2020 spring season, our G14U EXTRA team captured first place at the Section 1 EXTRA championship game over Memorial Day weekend! Pasadena leapt to an early 4-0 lead over Corona in the first 15 minutes, and never looked back from their strong start. This is the fourth year with this team for parent coaches Josh Kreinberg and Simon Coombes, and the team spirit shows on the field. Four different players from Region 13 scored, and the defense left no openings, shutting out Corona 7-0. - Steve Haegelin, reporting from the Redlands Sports Complex.

Everyone who plays with AYSO in the fall is eligible to try out for a team in the Thanksgiving tournament, and for an All-Star team, which starts in January 2022. A new cohort of EXTRA teams will form after that. If you'd like to get involved and help make the EXTRA teams happen, consider joining Region 13's Board of Directors.

LOTG Answers

1. Corner kick for Blue. "A goal may be scored directly from a goal kick, but only against the opposing team; if the ball directly enters the kicker’s goal, a corner kick is awarded to the opponents." Corner kicks are also opportunities for counterattacks. Depending on the dynamics of the game at the time, this might actually turn out to be a good idea (consternation to the coach notwithstanding), because corner kicks can be opportunities to counterattack if the opponents haven't practiced the set pieces.

2. Throw in for the other team. If the ball "touches a match official, remains on the field of play," and immediately leads to a goal, a promising attack, or change in possession, then it would be a dropped ball to the Red team. Otherwise, play continues as normal.

3. Goal kick for Yellow. You can dribble a dropped ball, but it must touch another player (from either team) before a goal can be scored.

Message from the Regional Commissioner

Have you ever found yourself wondering who runs Region 13?

Region 13 has a board of directors - much like a corporation - we have bylaws and policies and procedures that we need to follow. Some of these are our own, and many of them come directly from the AYSO National Organization. The board of directors ensures that we follow all those rules - while putting together community soccer programs. As a board of directors, we are filtering all of our decisions about the programming decisions we make through the lens of "Safe, Fair, and Fun."

The board of directors has about 30 volunteers - people just like you - who love soccer and love our community. We meet once a month - all year round. Before COVID-19, we met in person at the AYSO Region 13 Clubhouse - and shared a meal and a meeting. We now hold our meetings on Zoom - but they are no less fun - with lively discussion, agreement, and disagreement. We become friends - and a community - during these meetings - and we enjoy welcoming new members to our board. We hold our meetings on the first Thursday of the month, and we welcome any member of our community to join us on Zoom.

In next month's newsletter, we will meet two new members of our board, Patrick Shopbell and Tara Mastro, who are doing fantastic work for our community.

See you on the field,

Taj Chiu,

Region 13's Volunteer Regional Commissioner and Soccer Mom
