ME: Come out for a [bike] ride
HIM: I can’t find the time.
ME: What about Sunday 6.30am.. the weather’s gonna be beautiful.
HIM: Um, to be honest. I’d struggle..
ME: We’ll go light, and be back for breakfast..
HIM: Agh, and my knees are hurting..
ME: Well, I’m here for you when you’re ready buddy..
Both new friends have high powered jobs
Both expert project managers
My throw away line to both of them?
‘You gotta find the time to..
‘Project manage yourself’
I also offered.. ‘I see it a lot in clinic’..
It was only a chat over beer + pizza.
In clinic though I hear this a LOT.
From new patients I hear the problems..
- Hip or knee pain
- Struggling to get outside
- Struggling with weight gain
- Grabbing food on the go.. whatever's to hand
Then I ask about their job..
And it’s often full-on:
No time to think about themselves
No time to think about what good food looks like
No time to plan their activity, and no time to take a breath.
So, that’s the first expert insight that I pass on.
And arguably, It is the most important.
People often breath a sigh of relief when I point it out.
Someone else has recognised it and given them permission to change.
To take the time to focus on themselves.
So, if you’re struggling to find the time
If life is moving too fast, and your hip or knee is painful..
Give yourself permission
Take one hour a day to think about and look after yourself.
That’s what your hip or knee is telling you.
And your hip or knee will thank you for it.
Good luck!
