Dear New Stylist,
Welcome to this beautiful, challenging, and deeply human career. After 30 years behind the chair, I can tell you that our job is about much more than hair. It’s about the people who sit in front of us every day and the trust they place in our hands. Healthy, respectful touch is a powerful part of what we do. For some clients, a gentle shampoo, a careful sectioning, or the steady rhythm of a blow-dry is the only positive human contact they may experience that day. Never forget the comfort, dignity, and care you can communicate through your hands.
You’ll quickly learn that clients don’t just come for a haircut or color. They come for connection. They come to feel seen, heard, and cared for. Some will sit in your chair during the hardest seasons of their lives—loss, divorce, illness, stress, or uncertainty. In those moments, your kindness, your listening ear, and your calm presence will matter more than the perfect blend or the sharpest fade. Never underestimate the comfort you can offer simply by being present. And on the days the emotional weight of the job feels heavy, learn how to let it go—through prayer, quiet reflection, or whatever helps you release what isn’t yours to carry.
And then there are the joyful moments. You’ll celebrate engagements, new babies, promotions, fresh starts, and personal victories. You’ll get to be part of people’s milestones, and that is a real privilege. Share in their excitement. Let their happiness remind you why this career is so special.
As the years go on, you’ll also learn an important lesson: not every client is meant to stay. Some will bring stress, entitlement, or negativity into your space. It’s okay to let those clients go. Protect your peace, your time, and fill your cup when it’s empty. The right clients will respect you, value your work, and grow with you over the years.
Build a chair that feels safe, warm, and welcoming. Stay curious. Keep learning. Take care of your body and your spirit. And remember, the real magic of this profession isn’t just what you create with your hands—it’s the relationships you build with your heart.
Wishing you a long, fulfilling, and joyful career behind the chair.
With experience and encouragement,
A Stylist of 30 Years, Jill
