Introducing the next batch of vineyards who will be showcasing their wines: |
Blackbook Winery Blackbook was born of a love of three things: cool climate pinot noir and chardonnay; the English wine industry; and this fair city we call home, London. We are an urban winery located in a railway arch in Battersea, a stone's throw from Battersea Park in south London. The grapes are sourced from growers within hours of the city, carefully selected for their well-located vineyards and high quality grapes. Our ethos embraces a single fundamental goal: to make good wine. We endeavour to bring the hard work of our vineyard owners to the forefront by creating a range of single vineyard wines that showcase the quality and potential for making world-leading still wine here in England. We have two focal varieties, chardonnay and pinot noir. While we love these varieties, additional grapes are sourced annually to produce experimental releases that keep us on our toes! Sometimes they are even added to the line up if our creations work.

Sergio Verrillo, Blackbook Winery Sergio grew up in the US, a son of Italian and Hungarian immigrants surrounded by wine lovers who would vinify their own blends in the back garden and drink wine with breakfast. His wine career took off at pace when he moved to London in the noughties, and joined the Michelin world as a sommelier (Maze, Tamarind & Chez Bruce). Quickly realising that this was the industry for him, but his desire was to be in production rather than sales, he enrolled at Plumpton College in East Sussex where he earned a degree in Viticulture and Oenology in 2014. He spent the next few years as a travelling winemaker, seeking to learn and experience harvest in many of the great wine producing regions with a focus on cool climate pinot noir & chardonnay. Sergio’s journey took him from England (Greyfriars) to California (Flowers/Calera) to Burgundy (De Montille) to Stellenbosch (Mulderbosch) and then finally to New Zealand (Ata Rangi) before he stuck his passport in the drawer. Sergio is a winemaker who has a great appreciation for the classic production methods and the breadth of experience to innovate in order to ensure each wine produced is unique, distinct and creating a phenomenal representation of the carefully selected fruit.

Tom Archer, Head of Marketing, RootWave Tom is Head of Marketing for RootWave. RootWave kills weeds using electricity to give better weed control whilst protecting health and helping nature restore its soils, water and biodiversity. Tom is a crop protection specialist, he joined RootWave from UPL where he was European portfolio marketing manager, with over 20 years’ experience in weed control markets and new product development. Seminar introduction: Tractor-powered Electrical Weed Control in Vineyards What if we told you that you could achieve full, systemic control of weeds, in fewer treatments without using chemicals or disturbing the soil? No more worries about herbicide resistance, product withdrawals or the environmental impact of your weed control system. Then what if we told you that you could reserve this new machine now, for delivery in 2024? Weed control in vineyards is about to get better. Tom will discuss the breakthrough innovation for weed control for vineyards - the RootWave eWeeder. The product delivered full control of weeds in independent trials conducted in commercial orchards in the West of England during the summer of 2022. This talk will be the first chance for growers to examine the results from trials conducted by independent CROs in commercial vineyards that are taking place in May 2023. Tom will explore how the RootWave eWeeder uses patented high-frequency electricity to boil weeds from the root upwards, providing a more effective method of weed control than cutting, burning, or hoeing the weed above the surface. In fact, eWeeding is the only non-chemical solution to provide systemic control of weeds. The eWeeder is powered by a standard tractor and can operate in a range of weather conditions, treat near water courses and sensitive environments. This gives growers unmatched flexibility over treatment windows and scheduling. During the seminar, we will provide insights on how the RootWave eWeeder can reduce per-hectare costs in larger vineyards by providing better weed control in fewer treatments. The technology is certified organic and doesn’t disturb the soil, making it perfect for IPM systems. Tom will be on-hand to answer questions about this new product and where growers can see live demonstrations this summer.
