Happy New Year to All!
You may have noticed that FoNTRA is trying to move into the 2020s(!) with more advanced communications with our members.
We have started sending e-Blasts on matters looking for action, like a letter and/or deputation to Committee, or to sign a petition.
This email represents another form of communication - eNewsletter - for information on upcoming meetings and other activities.
Meanwhile we continue to hold virtual monthly General Members Meetings (GMM) - the next is on January 30th, deferred to due to a conflict with the City Planning meeting on COA improvements scheduled for January 16th. See the first item below.
In February we expect to revert to our usual 3rd Tuesday of the month.
We think this change is part of a wider conversation that is needed among RAs in Toronto - how can we be more effective in communicating and organizing at a time of major change. We are thinking of arranging an (in-person) mini-conference in the spring to discuss these kinds of things.

Committee of Adjustment KPMG Recommendations and Transformation Initiatives Stakeholder Update and Engagement Session – Tuesday, January 16 at 6:30-8:30pm at Metro HallBackground: In 2022, the City retained KPMG to conduct a review on how to improve the effective participation of the public and applicants in the public hearing process and build on the recommendations included in the End-To-End Review. The review culminated in a final report with 15 recommendations and an implementation plan, which went before the Planning and Housing Committee in February 2023 as Item 2023.PH2.5.
City staff wrote an accompanying report supporting the recommendations and proposing a multi-year implementation plan. One of KPMG’s recommendations was to regularly engage with applicants and members of the public outside of the public hearing process, and specifically recommended annual meetings with industry and residents associations to gather feedback about the public hearing process, including the implementation of the recommendations included in their report. The January 16th session is the first of these annual meetings.
Location and Time: The meeting will be held in person at Metro Hall (55 John St), 3rd Floor, Room 308/309, on January 16, 2024, from 6:30 to 8:30pm. There will be no virtual option for participation.

Night Economy Town Hall Wednesday, January 17, 2024, 6-9pm at Beanfield Centre at Exhibition Place (or virtual). The public is invited to attend the first-ever Night Economy Town Hall Attendees will learn about updated dining and entertainment regulatory changes, along with the latest City-wide plans and strategies supported by the Night Economy, including SafeTO: A Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, and City-authored resources, such as the Good Neighbour Guide for Late-Night Businesses.

TTC Enforcement Policies – opportunity to attend consultationLocation - VirtualThe Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will conduct a virtual consultation to obtain feedback on three proposed policies related to enforcement activities. These proposed policies were developed in response to recommendations made by the Ombudsman Toronto in their report on April 20, 2017, called An Investigation into the Toronto Transit Commission’s Oversight of its Transit Enforcement Unit.
The proposed policies are intended to strengthen accountability and public trust in enforcement activities and focus on: 1. Use of Force; 2. Use of Discretion; and 3. Body-Worn Camera and Special Constable In-Car Camera System.
The proposed policies can be found in a document called "Policies to Support the Revenue Protection ..."The contact person is listed on page 12 of the report is Angela Gibson, Executive Director and her email is angela.gibson@ttc.ca
The TTC is seeking participants to attend a virtual consultation in Winter 2024 to obtain feedback on the three policies listed above. Please let us know if any members of your organization would be interested in participating in the consultation by Friday, January 12th.
A follow-up email with the date and details of the virtual consultation will be shared in the coming weeks, should members of your organization be interested in participating.

Have your say: e-scooters and e-bikes virtual public meeting with the City of Toronto for persons with disabilitiesHosted by CNIB, join Janet Lo from the City of Toronto’s Transportation Services Division for a public meeting on e-scooters, e-bikes, and other micro mobility vehicles in the City of Toronto. The City of Toronto is consulting the public and conducting research on a proposal for new policies and a new pilot project for small, lightweight vehicles, like electric kick-scooters and electric mini-cars, that are currently not allowed on the City’s streets.
While e-bikes are already allowed on bike lanes and streets, electric kick-scooters (also known as e-scooters) are currently not allowed on public streets, sidewalks, or bike lanes. Along with this, electric mini-cars (also known as Low Speed Vehicles) are currently not allowed on public streets either in Toronto. This virtual public meeting will include a presentation from City staff, followed by an opportunity to ask questions and to provide comments and feedback on the city’s presentation and how it will impact the disability community.

Neighbourhood Street Plans Neighbourhood Streets Plans (NSPs) are a new service for neighbourhoods where traffic and travel patterns may be impacting the safety and mobility of people using the streets. Through the NSP process, a team of City staff will work with communities to identify local issues and opportunities, prioritize the greatest needs, and recommend changes to traffic operations and street designs. NSPs consider the needs of all road users and emphasize the safety of vulnerable road users such as seniors, school children, and people walking and cycling.
