OUT OF THE BLUE: how to set up a Cyanotype Practice on a Budget
Facilitated by Will Maclean aka Blue Boy Saturday May 31, 2025 1 - 4pm Free
Travel back in time with us to learn the 180 year old photographic process of cyanotype! We’ll be using recipes from the 1840s that remain largely unchanged to make highly-detailed, archival, contact-prints. By the end of the workshop, you will have the skills and confidence necessary to recreate the process in the comfort of your home without the use of a darkroom or harsh chemicals.
Cyanotype is both cost effective and forgiving as a process. It is a wonderfully accessible printing method and this workshop will walk you through this low-cost technique. From the bare bones to an advanced setup, we will go over what you need and how to get it on any budget.
This workshop is open to all ages, but children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
Technical expertise or prior experience with printing is not required. At the end of the workshop each participant will take home a completed print, and a kit of materials necessary to make more prints at home.

Learn Soft Skills through the Collaboratory
The Media Collab's Soft Skills is a monthly open session that provides an informal space to learn new techniques, software, or technologies through one-on-one or group sessions. The aim of Soft Skills is to challenge the preconception that technology is hard, and create a learning environment that encourages risk-taking and experimentation.
Each month the Media Collab teaches a specific Soft Skill that you can learn during our drop-in hours, between 3-7pm on Thursdays at Forest City Gallery.
Learn how to make your own thaumatrope this May!
This 19th century optical toy is a precursor to animated movement and is a fun activity that introduces you to the basics of frame-by-frame animation. This drop-in activity is free and open to all ages.

Join us at the upcoming Opening Reception and Artist Talk for Stories of Belonging by Colleen Heslin
Colleen Heslin Stories of Belonging May 29 - July 24, 2025 Forest City Gallery (1025 Elias St)
Check out the upcoming exhibition Artist Talk and Opening Reception, Stories of Belonging by Colleen Heslin on Thursday, May 29th from 5:30 - 8 pm.
Stories of belonging by Colleen Heslin is an installation of six hand-dyed, sewn monochrome abstract paintings that explore colour theory and queer pride. Each work reflects on progressive stages of spiritual, emotional, and psychological awakening brought on by social disconnection and generational dysfunction within western culture. These paintings echo shifts towards presence and self-awareness, from unconscious to consciously bringing attention to subtle nuances within colour spectrums.
