Thanks to a federal election, it has been a stressful couple of weeks for me and my fellow liberal-minded Canadians. I've barely been able to write, so I've been dissociating in a couple of different ways: reading (though it hasn't been as much as usual) and time-travelling via late 90s-early 2000s romcom movies. And let me tell, those movies were a trip.
What the hell were we thinking? I mean, I suppose as a product of their time they were okay, but really? Ugh.
Rewatching She's All That, while adorably nostalgic, irritated me so much. That makeover? As if anyone, even Freddie Prinze Jr., could believe Rachael Leigh Cook, even wearing a ridiculous wig and huge glasses, was anything but gorgeous. I must admit, though, Matthew Lillard's dance scene was pretty impressive.
13 Going On 30 was also on the agenda, and again it was the dance scene that saved it. Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo dancing to Thriller? Hilarious.
Boys and Girls, with Freddie Prinze Jr. and Claire Forlani, is barely worth a mention. It definitely deserves its 5.4/10 rating on IMDB. These characters had almost zero chemistry. I didn't believe there were friends, never mind that they were madly in love with each other.
The best rewatch was Legally Blonde. Reese Witherspoon's Elle Woods never fails to deliver some good cheer when I need it. And really, I wouldn't even consider it a romcom. The relationship with Luke Wilson's character is secondary to Elle's accomplishments.
