Welcome to your

Weekly Update

Dear Friends

Pimm’s and Bingo
As a thank you to those who have been involved in the Families and Children’s ministry over the past year, Charlotte organised a Pimm’s and Bingo hour in the Pastoral Centre. The company was good and there were prizes available for those who completed a line or full house! Thank you, Charlotte, for a great idea and for your organisation. As we head in to another academic year, please continue to pray that that Lord would enable our ministry amongst younger families and children to flourish.

Continuing The God Story
Our journey through The God Story comes to an end this Sunday. Last week we reflected on The Revelation and how the vision given to John on the Island of Patmos encouraged the churches not to give up or give in when the pressure was on. This week our theme is Conclusion: Stepping into the Story. We’ll be focusing on Luke’s account of the two walking on the road to Emmaus directly after Jesus’ resurrection and thinking about how just as their encounter with the Risen Lord changed them forever, so it should change us.

Thank you from Bookham Community Association (BCA)
Keith Slark, Chair of the BCA, has written to say thank you for the magnificent contribution from Churches Together in Bookham both in the very successful running of the Soft Drinks Stall at Village Day and the donation of £300. He says, “Please pass on our sincere thanks to all those who helped. We do appreciate how much work it is particularly on hot days for so long … we have added the £300 to your profits which means that Churches Together contributed £589 towards our total. A really magnificent result and you kept the children hydrated and happy! Thank you.”

Keeping up to date
Our weekly notice sheet is available online (click here) and in church. Excerpts from our 10 o’clock service last Sunday, including the latest sermon in The God Story are available here. The September magazine (thank you, Chris and team) is now also available, either online (click here) or in church. My thanks to Gill and Charlotte who will be taking care of the weekly email over the next couple of weeks.

And finally…
I always figured that when Dolly Parton died it would be big news! One thing that I couldn’t help noticing in the coverage is how many people have spoken well of her. Perhaps this has something to do with the Christian foundations of her life? In a Netflix series, she recalled how an older woman at church told her God had anointed her – a prophecy she said “triggered a faith in me” and drove her to serve God in her music. Although as an adult she stopped attending church, she said in an interview in 2020, “Every single day, before I do anything, I wake up and I thank God for the night and ask him to bless the day … and bring all the right stuff in. And just to guide me, lead me. And I always pray that he’ll let me uplift mankind and glorify him.”

Wishing you much grace and peace.

Alan
