We had a great rehearsal with our first group of Primary Choirs on Friday 13th at Wyong. All schools - Wyong PS, Brooke Ave PS, Bateau Bay PS, Heritage College and Lake Macquarie PS - were well prepared and produced a beautiful sound.
Highlights were:
Ode to Joy in Wiradjuri - they picked it up as though they had been speaking Wiradjuri all their lives! Confident and authentic.
Firefly - the voices flashed and flickered, just like a firefly.
Boatman - Chilly, just like swimming in freezing water.
The Moon - voices shone like moonbeams.
Corner of the Sky - We heard all the seasons in one song.
One Little Candle - voices reflected the light of a candle.
Our own Aussie, Ian Jefferson, with 3 of his best and most Australian songs:
Brolga Dance - powerful rhythms of the dance came through strongly
Enjoy the Storm - frequent time changes handled well, and captured the characteristics of a storm - the drive, the strength and the rapid changes.
Corrugated Iron - a very Aussie picture of drought - burning sun, red dust, rain must come.
Thank you, singers and teachers, for a great example of music's power to tell stories.
