Good afternoon SMMS Families,
I hope you and your students are enjoying the school year and getting into a routine. We certainly are here! I’m excited about the work our teachers are doing. We’ve established our class routines, gotten to know our classes and class dynamics, and now we’re really starting to sink our teeth into the content. I’m happy we’re highlighting our new STEM program – it's an exciting class that brings knowledge to action in science, technology, engineering, and math – and our dynamic new STEM teacher, Mrs. Barnett.
We have quite a few new staff joining us this year – keep an eye on the District's Facebook page for their names and photo – and the feeling in the halls of our school is exciting and fresh with energy.
Speaking of energy, we’re going to share the club, activity and athletic opportunities we have here at the Middle School in this newsletter (see the first ones below) and celebrate their accomplishments as often as we can.
This week’s character dare is about energy, too. We build memories and community when we get out and play with our kids and neighbors.
Snap some photos of whatever you do outside over the next two weeks and share them below, email them in or post them to social media with the hashtag #CharaterStrong and #SMWay. We’d love to see them.
Finally, please see the message from our PE department below about gym clothes. We want our students to wear comfortable athletic clothes so they can fully participate in class and head back to the classrooms in dry street clothes.
Have a great weekend! Jim Hendrickson Principal

Learning and Doing in Middle School’s new STEM Class |
In a quiet corner on the bottom floor of South Milwaukee Middle School, there’s a room with tall ceilings above and darkened squares on the parquet floors where heavy equipment or tables might have been. It’s clearly a workshop, which makes it the perfect place for the school’s new STEM Lab.
“Who doesn’t have a power cord?” teacher Julie Barnett asks, holding a wire up in the air. “Who needs a tray?”
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – a new course being offered at the middle school aimed to prepare interested students for the Career and Tech program at the high school level.
With the new program comes a new teacher. Barnett, who lives just down the road from the school has worked at St. Anthony’s Catholic School and for a decade at Discovery World in Milwaukee.

Dare: Grab your old baseball, soccer ball, baseball, kickball, etc., and head to the park or backyard to play together. Better yet, gather some neighbors or friends and see if you can get a community game going with families and kids.

Gym Clothes are Back in Style! Students assigned gym lockers -Need to have athletic wear to change into
In a return to pre-pandemic expectations, all students in the middle and high school are going to have to change into athletic wear for Physical Education classes going forward.
This week students were assigned a lock and locker. Students are now required to wear (and keep in their lockers) a t-shirt (long sleeve or sweatshirt if going outside) and shorts (yoga pants or joggers) socks and athletic tennis shoes.
Students can wear their sneakers to school the day of PE or keep an extra pair in their locker. Students may also keep deodorant in their lockers.
Athletic clothes should be stored in the locker for the week to make it easier. At the end of each week we will encourage students to take home their uniform on the weekend to wash and bring back the next week.
6th Grade Parents/Guardians: Since combination locks are new for your son/daughter, please practice at home and help your child.
