welcomes a new director

Since graduating in 2019, Taylor has been working in the outdoor industry connecting students to the Northwoods by facilitating experiences for students to gain confidence and find inspiration in outdoor activities. As an Outward Bound instructor Taylor led students through the ups and downs of 30-day wilderness expeditions in canoe country, where students developed autonomy in their skills to take over leadership roles as they progressed in their expedition. Students came out of these trips knowing they could succeed even in the most challenging of environments.

With this same philosophy Taylor is excited to bring his progression based teaching to North Coast to get more people in boats and develop the confidence to take on the dynamic waters of Lake Superior. With land drills, on water demos, and games each student will be able to work through their nervousness, and hop into our sailboats with confidence. Having been nervous when he first started sailing, Taylor knows how hard it can be to work through those emotions, and he is eager to get students out there to have the best possible experience on the water.

Already in his first few weeks, he’s instructed over 24 sailors who started the first day with nervousness to finish as sailors who were able to sail upwind all the way to the Marina. By the end of the week students were chomping at the bit to set sail on their own.

It’s a special thing to watch students connect to the lake in a new way, and see their skills progress to be able to handle a boat on their own. Taylor’s passion for building skills and confidence does not just stop at youth. With North Coast’s first Adult lessons being offered with “All Hands Sailing”, people of any age can find opportunities to hit the water, learn skills, and connect with Lake Superior in a new way.

In working within the outdoor industry for 6 years Taylor has seen barriers to explore especially without the proper equipment or know-how. Taylor strives to continue to build the North Coast Community sailing culture into a place where anyone can access reliable gear and quality instruction. Taylor hopes you will stop by to say “Hi”, or wave to us from shore as our classes fill their sails with good ol’ Lake superior wind. Let’s get you out there!

Taylor will also be the new youth swim coach for the Bay Area Swim Team when the season starts in October. We'll have information on swim team soon!

Upcoming Facility Closures

Tuesday, July 1st - Pool, hot tub, and sauna closed for the first half of the day. We have a broken pump and are working to fix it for Tuesday evening. Please check the website for the latest information before you come in.

Friday, July 4th - Facility Closed

Friday, August 1st & Saturday, August 2nd - Facility Closed

We are closed for our biggest fundraiser of the year, the Point to La Pointe. If you want to lift heavy things we would love your volunteer help.

Those with 24 hour access will still be able to use the gym and showers.

We close due to weather conditions at the discretion of our staff. If the Rec Center is closed, all programming will be canceled. 24 Hour Access will remain open to the best of our ability. Check our calendar and Facebook for updates. Closures due to weather will also be announced on WDIO TV Channels 10/13.
