6th Grade Social Studies "Breaks Out"
This week, 6th graders in Mrs. Schlabach's classes worked on collaboration, communication, and problem solving skills to complete a BreakoutEdu (similar to a breakout room).
Mrs. Schalbach reported the students worked very hard and were engaged throughout the activity and that each group was able to "break out", and thoroughly reflect on how they thought the game went during the discussion time.
The insights the students had about the activity and the kindness they shared towards one another was truly amazing!

Service Learning Projects Build Bond Between School and Community
Last year Middle School students spent time in the community, around the Middle School and in elementary schools giving back. That effort is expanding this year.
During the months of January and February, SMMS students will be taking part in a service learning project to build a stronger connection with their school and community.
Students will team up with their homebase classes to choose and carry out their own service learning project that will better the school or local community.
Students will have the opportunity to work on something they are passionate about while at school and find others who share their same passions.
These projects will then culminate in an assembly at the end of February to congratulate all students on their hard work and reflect on the importance of service learning projects for their local communities.

n this episode we hear a little bit about South Milwaukee Middle School’s Cold Winter Warm Hearts initiative last year and how they’re building on that effort this year. While the projects are meant to help others, there is some real thought behind what giving to others can do for an organization’s internal culture and the members of that community.
