Ballantyne Families Helping Neighbors In Need

Monthly Newsletter - November 2023

106 Ballantyne families will have a Thanksgiving meal because of you!

A big THANK you for your support of our holiday food drive!  You are making a HUGE impact on our community!

To support the holiday food drive for Thanksgiving and the December holidays, we surpassed our goal and collected over $21,000 and 350 food bags to make holiday meals!  Amazing!   So many volunteers and groups came together to make this effort happen.  A special shout out to Brighthouse Financial!   Their employees made over 75 encouraging notes, created 228 bags, and gave over $3425 in grocery gift cards!

For Thanksgiving, every identified family will receive 2encouraging notes from the community, Thanksgiving/Fall napkins and a resource guide.  In addition:
  • Each elementary/middle school family will receive a $50 grocery gift card and 2 bags of food to make 2 holiday meals.
  • Each high school family will receive a $150 grocery gift card to purchase a meal.  (High schoolers typically bring things home on the bus.  We don’t want them bringing food home in front of their peers.)
Thanksgiving food support will be delivered to the school counselors/social worker on November 16.   We are still in need of volunteers to help with this effort – www.tinyurl.com/bfvolunteers2023-2024

We are so thankful for all your generosity and support in making the holidays brighter for our families in need!   Please take a look at the THANKS section below.   It is unbelievable to see how many people came together to help our neighbors in need!   I’m continually amazed by our incredible community! THANK YOU!

Wishing you and your family a happy, safe, and healthy Thanksgiving!

Thank You from a Ballantyne Families Recipient
“I wanted to personally thank you and your organization for your generosity.  You have no idea how much these gift cards help our family.  We are here with no family support, and I am humbled to know that there are such good people in this world like you and those in your organization that give back to help people like us.  Thank you!”
Pantry Update
November is a time to be thankful and the pantry team is very thankful for all the support we have received this month.  First, we are thankful for all the generous Amazon WishList donations that continue to come into the pantry.
We are very thankful for all of the amazing volunteers who come every Thursday to fill and deliver bags to more than 11 families each week – a total of 132 family pantry deliveries since the beginning of the 2023 school year!
We are thankful for Counselor Nicki Elkins who personally delivered more than 150 donated items from Ballantyne Elementary at 7:30am one morning!
We are thankful to Sheila Matthews who brought items collected from the Endhaven school community.  Sheila went the distance by staying to sort, date and shelve the items!
We are thankful to be able to support our community in such a direct way – and we recognize the Ballantyne Families pantry would not be able to do this without the broader support of our entire community.
We are thankful for everyone sharing their generosity, time, and efforts.
Sincerely,
Audi, Erin, Tammy and Sheilah

Food Drives/Partnership Update
Food Drive:

Thank you Endhaven and Ballantyne Elementary Schools for collecting food for our pantry during the month of October.  Ballantyne Elementary students brought food in during their Red Ribbon Week and Endhaven collected canned goods at their boosterthon fun run!

For the month of November, we have 3 groups hosting food drives for our pantry. They are Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center, SwimMAC’s Shark 2 and Dolphin 2 swim groups and the Ardrey Neighborhood through their annual Jingle Jog on Thanksgiving Day!

As demand for the pantry holds steady, we are grateful for groups who are willing to hold food drives to keep the pantry stocked. If you or an organization you are a part of would like to hold a food drive, please reach out to Lauren Rosenbaum through email at lauren@ballantynefamilies.org.

Volunteer of the Month
Tammy Menzel and Jen Smith are the dynamic duo who oversee the Holiday giving which is our largest community-wide effort of the year!
They have done an amazing job coordinating with multiple groups to create food bags to make a holiday meal and have led the communication efforts across the schools and across the Ballantyne Families’ communication sources. These efforts take a lot of time and effort, especially for the 1st time!

Tammy is also one of the Pantry Manager Assistants. We are thankful for Tammy’s and Jen’s can-do attitude, dedication and passion to make a difference in our community!

Counselor Spotlight
Nicki Elkins - Ballantyne Elementary School Counselor

Some facts from Nicki:
  • I am excited to be entering my 9th year as a School Counselor and my 6th in CMS. I changed careers late in life to follow my passion to help all students realize that “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from The University of South Carolina in 1992 and my Master of Education in Counseling and Development from Winthrop University in 2012.
  • Besides my professional duties, I am also a proud Mom to my only son, Graham. He is in his Junior year at Clemson University. I am also passionate about working in the yard, creating yard art, and hanging out with my rescue dog, Kobe. My goal is to advocate for all students and to help them develop into strong, responsible leaders in our community.
