‘Slip Away’ has a classic trance feel with modern energy. What was your vision when producing this track?
That’s because it is a classic in terms of my production career! I originally composed the track about 15 years ago when I was just starting out. This is actually the third incarnation of the track—and its final form.
Luke Hyatt’s vocals add a powerful emotional layer to the song. How did the collaboration come about, and what was it like working together?
Luke and I were introduced through mutual friends years ago, and we started working together, bouncing ideas around. I used to call him Mr. One Take because he would nail the vocal on the first try every time!
Later, we went on to form the drum and bass band Damn Dirty Ape with Richard Belgrave (a.k.a. Hysterix), but that’s another story!
As for the vocals on this track, I came up with the title, and Luke just ran with it. If I’d used all the vocals he recorded, the track would have been 10 minutes long—lol.
The track features rolling basslines, arp plucks, and bright piano melodies. Can you share some insight into your production process and sound design choices?
My production process is chaotic at first—I usually start with a sample or even just a loop and build from there. I tend to create small segments, layering sounds as I go, adding melodies and textures along the way.
I do have three go-to synths that some might say are outdated, but I swear by them: Sylenth, Spire, and my trusty Korg M1 for all my pianos. Don’t get me wrong, I use other synths from time to time, but I always start with these.
You’ve created a high-energy club anthem. How do you see ‘Slip Away’ fitting into a DJ set, and what kind of crowd reaction do you hope for?
I can see Slip Away sitting well in the middle or near the end of a set. As for the reaction? I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to see the crowd completely lose themselves in it! But honestly, if even just a handful of people connect with the track, I’m happy.
‘Slip Away’ is packed with infectious hooks—can fans expect more releases in a similar style? Do you have any upcoming projects or tracks in the pipeline?
Yes, 100%! I’m currently working on three projects, all in different styles of trance, ranging from high-energy to hard trance.
And now I can officially announce—I’ve got new music signed to Tidy Trax! The release is being scheduled as we speak. And hopefully, you lovely lot at LK will be receiving some fresh material from me very, very soon. 😉
