Standout swimmers from the competition include France's Leon Marchand and Romania's David Popovici, who both took multiple world titles, with a world record for the former and European record for the latter.
The dominance of European men in water polo continued as Spain won its fourth world title in defeating a Hungarian team that had knocked out the Olympic champions, Croatia. The women’s title went to Greece, who beat Paris 2024 silver medallists Hungary in the final.
Spain finished the artistic swimming programme with nine medals, one more than any other nation, with Iris Tio Casas earning three golds.
Germany dominated open water swimming, with Florian Wellbrock winning all three men’s individual golds and contributing to victory in the team event.
Italy was the top European nation in diving, finishing fourth in the medals table. A key part was played by Chiara Pellacani, who won two individual bronzes and partnered Matteo Santoro to the 3m synchro title - the first world diving gold for their country since 2015.
European men won silver and bronze in men’s high diving.
