Work for EA NYC!

We’re launching season 2 of EA NYC Rings this month!

Rings are small groups of EA NYC members who team up and work together for 4 months on a shared project. The initiative will run from June to September, and the goal is for each Ring to produce a deliverable by the end of the program and share their results with the EA NYC community! We've already compiled a list of projects and project leaders, so check out this list and register your interest in joining a specific team! It's a great opportunity to get involved with an EA project for just a few hours a week and meet other members of EA NYC 😄

Finally there are some cool opportunities around the rest of the EA community:

CEA is launching another round of its Virtual Programs, including Intro and In-depth EA fellowships, and a reading group for The Precipice. Applications are due June 27th.
80,000 Hours has created a n ew 8-week career planning course, which you can read on their website or through a series of weekly emails.
EA Cambridge is hosting an 8-week Alternative Proteins Seminar, and an 8-week AGI Safety Seminar Series, both starting in July.

On Our Minds

Aaron hates Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem because his friends use it to justify the non-existence of objective reality...*groan*
This video is a succinct and elegant summary of some of the implications of incompleteness and it has him thinking. Luckily there's no hole at the bottom of moral reality, right? ... Right?

Arushi read this whistleblower's account of how Facebook ignored misuse of its platform by political leaders in countries not considered "priorities", allowing dictators to sway elections in their favor. She also read this NYT expose on how a UN agency meant to tackle climate change in the shipping industry has instead repeatedly delayed and watered down climate regulations. Sorry about all the downers this month, she'll try and keep it positive for the next issue 😅

Reading Group

This month we'll be reading Moral Tribes, by Joshua Greene. Here's a description:

Community Spotlight: John Li

"I first heard of EA around 2011. The ideas resonated but laid mostly dormant, serving only to make me feel bad about not being a better person. In 2019, I read a Slate Star Codex post that knocked down some of those psychological barriers, leading me to donate significantly more and seek out local community. It's been lovely to meet so many kind, smart, fun people through EA NYC! Recent EA things on my mind include how to have an impactful career as a software developer, wild animal welfare, and that 80k Hours episode on mental health."
