Dr. Robert Shields is an Assistant Professor at Arkansas State University joining the Department of Biological Sciences in 2021. In 2023, Dr. Shields was awarded a Research Development Grant (RDG) from the Arkansas INBRE. Shields has recently applied and been awarded TWO grants from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research of the NIH – one being a five-year R01 award and the other, a three-year R15 award. The focus of his work is identifying and characterizing essential genes of the dental caries pathogen, Streptococcus mutans. His work focuses on an understudied mechanism of gene transfer in the oral microbiome. Elucidating mechanisms of gene transfer is critical for understanding S. mutans adaptability and the ability to combat oral disease. Beyond, his contributions to this important scientific field, Dr. Shields is involving undergraduate and graduate students providing modern and high-quality research experiences to individuals who are underrepresented in science. The Arkansas INBRE is proud to have supported Dr. Shields in his efforts to establish his research program at Arkansas State University. |

The Arkansas Children’s Research Institute Fall Research Symposium on Oct 30, will focus on “Harvesting the Omics Revolution: A Systems Biology Approach for Advancing Pediatric Research.” Symposium will highlight research in areas such as proteomics, genomics, metabolomics and the microbiome.
Event will be from 8 am to 5 pm in Brandon Auditorium on the Arkansas Children’s campus. |

This week we highlight one of our 2024 Summer Students Alyssa Nolan from University of Central Arkansas who researched at UAMS this summer. “It has been super fun getting a really good hands-on experience and getting to learn more about all of the different research careers that are out there and I'm super grateful to have this opportunity.” More profiles |

On the Road with AR INBRE |
Members of AR INBRE’s Admin Core recently traveled to two of our participating institutions – Philander Smith University (PSU) and University of Arkansas, Little Rock (UALR). The purpose of the visits were to meet with faculty, staff and students to present our Program’s opportunities.
Said Dr. Jerry Ware, AR INBRE Program Coordinator or Developmental Research Project Program Director, “PSU is a small Historic Black College and University (HBCU). We met with faculty and students from a variety of departments to make them aware of what we have to offer to support their biomedical and data science research efforts, as well as encouraged them to sign up for our newsletter. UALR is one of the sites of our Bioinformatics Core (MidSouth Bioinformatics Center) and bioinformatics graduate program (in partnership with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences).” |

Virtual Metagenomics Workshop, Nov 4-8, 9 am to 4 pm with 1-hour lunch break. Learn how to use the UNIX command line, analytical workflows and public tools to independently analyze sequencing data plus how to visualize and render data using graphing tools.
This workshop, targeted towards undergrad or grad students, and researchers in biology or related fields, covers analyses of 16s and whole genome shotgun metagenomic sequence data, including community analysis and assembly. Apply by Oct 28. More |
