March 22, 2024

Our Spring Concert was a hit!  Thank you for joining us and thank you to Mrs. Tinsen for putting together a showcase of learning.
Upcoming Referendum Info
Vote absentee at city hall until March 29.  If voting in-person on April 2, most Lakeview area residents vote at Divine Mercy.  Some of the residents in our area vote at the library.  See this link for more voting information in SM.
On April 2nd, the school board of South Milwaukee has placed a question on the ballot that will ask the voters of South Milwaukee if they will approve additional operational funding for the school district. This is a 5-year request from the school board to the residents of South Milwaukee of $2 million per year. Those funds would be used for specific purposes, including:
• Safety upgrades such as more cameras and more interior safety upgrades to add to the existing safety measures we have in place,
• Supportive funding to replace outdated technology and continue to attract and retain the best educators,
• Successful academic pursuits, including additional career exploration pathways and increased opportunities for elementary technology instruction by hiring teachers specifically for this purpose at the elementary level.
The tax implications of this referendum request is an $8 increase on a property valued at $200,000.  More detailed tax information as well as the answers to other questions about the referendum
are available on our district website.
Please be sure to vote on April 2nd - thank you!
March MATHness at Lakeview!
We celebrated a month of working really hard on ST Math (a computer-based math reinforcement program).  Students that completed the most puzzles in March got to play in a basketball game on Friday.  Mr. Tinsen's class completed the most puzzles, and Mrs. Henneberry's class was in 2nd place.  We love Jiji the penguin (the mascot for ST Math).

State Forward Testing
All students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be taking the state assessment (known as the "Forward Exam") the week of April 8.  A few things that families can do to help students feel well and perform well on the assessment:
• Be in school every day.  Students that miss days have to take the test on a different day, which means missing more learning.  There will be at least one test every day on April 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.
• Have a pair of wired, working headphones.  They are needed for all of the tests.  Ask your child and replace if necessary (Dollar Store headphones work fine)
• Get sleep and eat each day.  Rested bodies that have food in tummies allow students to think about what they are doing on the test.
• Encourage a positive attitude!  Our students have learned so much and this is a chance to demonstrate it!
• If your student is anxious, assure them that the test is untimed (students can take as long as they need) and that it is to see how they are growing.
• Ask your teacher or Mr. Sepersky if you have any questions about Forward testing.
Summer School Info
Summer School registration will happen in April, right after spring break.  Informational flyers will be sent home the first week of April with directions about registration.

Registration will be open from April 5 to May 1.  All summer school registration will be online through your Infinite Campus parent portal.  Students that have been referred to summer school for reading, writing, or math will automatically have those classes in their schedule.

South Milwaukee also offers a wide variety of fun enrichment classes for summer school, and they are all free!

Summer school registration will close on May 1 and there are NO late registrations accepted.

Summer school will once again be at the middle school.  It will start on June 18 and end on July 25.  It is Monday through Thursday from 8am-Noon.
Lakeview's Walking School Bus returns Wednesday, April 3rd!
At 8:00 am, at least 2 teachers will be at each of the starting points (see the map below). You will hear us coming because each group usually plays instruments!  Students and families can join at the starting point or along the route to school.
Once we reach school, we take a picture together.
Remember that April 3rd is a half day of school.  Student will be dismissed at 11:45am.
The starting locations are:
5th and Lakeview
7th and Michigan
9th and Lakeview (walking up 8th Ave)
We have special guests joining us on our upcoming walks!  You may get to walk with firefighters, police officers, elected officials, or news cameras!  Join the fun.

Please note:  The walking school bus is only for coming to school - students and families need to plan on their own for getting home.
