COMIX FUN FACTS!

"Amatl" is the Aztec (Nahuatl) word for paper!

Specifically, the word "amatl" refers to the delicate paper made from the inner bark of fig trees and used in pre-contact Mesoamerica for many purposes, most notably to make the earliest known codices. While banned by the Spanish, this paper-making tradition lives on in the state of Puebla in Mexico.

The first-known comic printed in the United States was first published in 1842!

The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck is a translation of Swiss artist Rudolphe Töpffer's Les Adventures de Monsieur Voix-Bois, and is the first known comic printed in the United States.

The first book to use the phrase "comic book" was published in 1897!

Richard Felton Outcault created The Yellow Kid in McFadden Flats, which contained a compilation of comic strips about the titular character. The popularity of the character proved the value of comics for marketing and entertainment purposes.
