CA DWR: New River Project will help provide safe, reliable water for local communities, wildlife, and ecosystems
As part of California’s overall Salton Sea Management Program, officials gathered in the City of Calexico on May 23 to celebrate the completion of the New River Improvement project: “We are here today because it is time to renew the New River and make it a symbol of the environmental restoration possible when we come together to make it happen,” said State Water Board Chair E. Joaquin Esquivel. “I am excited about what this project will accomplish to improve conditions in the river for the sake of wildlife and nearby communities.”

Accelerating California's Defense Against Wildfires and Climate Change
Leaders from across the state — ranging from scientists and environmental groups to local officials and Indigenous representatives — are praising the Governor’s Wildfire and Forest Resilience Task Force for its collaborative, science-based approach and focus on community empowerment. The Task Force's 25 deliverables aim to accelerate wildfire resilience through regionally tailored strategies, improved data sharing, public-private partnerships, and support for local and tribal entities.

The Race to Restore the LA River: Revitalization Efforts Grapple with the Effects of Climate Change
Efforts to restore the Los Angeles River are gaining momentum, but climate change and recent wildfires threaten to undermine decades of progress. Once a vital resource for the Tongva people and early settlers, the river now faces challenges from pollution, development, and increasingly extreme weather. Advocates like Friends of the LA River and American Rivers emphasize the river's importance to community health, climate resilience, and biodiversity. Areas like the Sepulveda Basin showcase successful restoration, offering natural spaces and cleaner water. However, wildfire runoff introduces toxic pollutants, underscoring the urgency of revitalization. As more than a million residents live within a mile of the river, its restoration is also a matter of environmental justice and public health. Advocates stress the need for continued investment and education to ensure a greener, more sustainable future for the LA River.
