Dear Middle School Families,
Thursday’s Lockdown, based on a false report, was a stressful event for our school community. How could it not be?
It comes on the heels of the very real tornado warning we had recently where our students and staff had to take shelter.
As much as I hate that they happened, I am so impressed with how our students acted quickly and quietly in both situations. On Thursday, I went around to each room and talked about what happened, thanked the students for being so responsible, and explained the big “why” of the “quietly” part.
During a lockdown, the lights go out, the door is locked and everyone needs to be silent so no attention is drawn to any one room.
In a weather situation, being quiet means everyone can hear announcements and instructions. We practice these situations so students know what to do and how to be as safe as possible, but also to help keep their anxiety levels down.
It’s not easy for adults, or our students. If you find your child dwelling on this incident or their mood or attitude changes for more than a short period, please reach out to the school counselor.
We have trained professionals that can help process these two situations for our students but we need to know about it.
Thursday’s event was a cruel hoax. I’m thankful it wasn’t real. It’s a good time to mention that one layer of protection we have against real threats is Speak Up Speak Out – a website for anonymous tips to express concern about a person’s actions or behaviors.
Talk to your child about their feelings, ask about their friends and any worries they might have about their mental health. Remind them that Speak Up Speak Out is there for them to get help where it’s needed and to keep us all safe.
Have a great weekend! Jim Hendrickson Principal

During the week of October 17th the middle school celebrated Unity Day.
Unity Day is a national movement to promote kindness, acceptance and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should experience bullying.
Last week, teachers began writing "kindness shout outs" to recognize when they saw students demonstrating kindness and acceptance. Students who received shoutouts had the chance to have their names read over the announcements and participate in games at our Unity Day assembly.
In home base, all students were given an orange sheet of paper and were asked to write something that makes them unique. The slips were put together to form an orange chain that was hung up by the front door.
We ended the week with a video promoting all of the clubs, sports and ways to get involved at school (below). Thank you for helping us celebrate Unity Day!

Students may order their yearbooks at the discounted rate of $28 through the end of October. They can do this one of two ways; by going online using the following link, or by turning in a paper order form and returning it to school no later than October 27. Forms were handed out during Homebase this week. Yearbook prices will increase after Nov. 1 but they will still be available to order.

The Middle School Cross Country team completed its season last week with the first ever Southeast Conference meet held at Whitnall Middle School. 13 schools competed at the conference meet.
The 6th- and 7th-grade boys’ team of Blake Ehlers, Ryder Rampolla, and Thomas Abundis also ran, with Blake and Ryder setting personal records.
The girl’s races were longer than the boys races due to a swarm of bees stinging runners.
The 6th- and 7th- grade girls team consisting of Becca Reagan, Maddie Behnke, Maddie Genduso, Grace Kehoe, and Scarlett Platka-Weber took 8th place. Each girl ran a personal best time.
The 8th grade girls had two runners compete. Lorelei Platka-Weber ran her fastest race of the year and set a personal record. Breanna Reagan finished 2nd. Breanna is the Southeast Conference 8th grade girls runner up and made First Team All-Conference.
The 8th grade boys finished 3rf in the conference meet. This team consists of Jeremiah Brown, Aidan Hinojosa, Brecken Houlihan, Jaxson Leanna, Gabe Osborne, and Grayson Wucher.
Brecken earned Second Team All-Conference Honors, by finishing 7th. Jeremiah won the race, setting a course record, and earning the Southeast Conference individual Championship title as well as earning First Team All-Conference honors.
Congratulations to all the Cross Country athletes and remember to keep training in the off season!
