Primary Engineer competition success

Six lucky Central Academy pupils visited Killingworth Lakeside Centre yesterday along with seven children from Bothal Academy to showcase their fantastic train projects at the Primary Engineer competition. Over the last two terms, the children have been busy designing and creating shoebox trains as well as trains powered by electrical circuits. They were interviewed by engineers from Northern Rail and tested their trains based on the distance they travel, how straight they travel and how far they can travel with additional carriages. We are very proud that one of our pupils won Best Theme for their amazing space-themed creation! A huge well done to everyone involved for their hard work, creativity, and brilliant engineering skills.

Crafty children book library trip

Year 4 had a fantastic trip to the library this week, where they learned how to sign up for their own library cards and explored the wide range of books available to borrow. It was wonderful to see their excitement about reading and discovering new stories. Afterwards, the children got creative by making beautiful Mother’s Day cards and crafting colourful origami butterflies. A lovely afternoon full of learning, creativity and thoughtful gestures.

Building knowledge about the construction industry

This week Year 2 made some new friends in the construction industry. They came to teach us about the opportunities on but also the dangers of construction sites. We listened so well that they've asked for our help in designing safety posters to be used on a real life building site. We'll keep you posted on how we get on!

2TM measure up well

2TM have been exploring height and length. The children were split into two teams and were given challenges to find things taller or longer than their given object. Then for the final challenge they had to work as a team to build a tower that was taller than Miss Mence’s whiteboard.

Paper planes

Ever wondered how a tiny fold can change a flight? We kicked off Science Week by taking one simple paper airplane and remixing it—bigger wings, skinnier bodies, wider frames—to find the design that flies the farthest. The exercise reinforced experimental design, hypothesis testing and hands-on problem solving.

Career of the week
