October is Prevention Month! We are observing Youth Substance Use Prevention Month and Substance Misuse Prevention Month, as well as Bullying Prevention Month.

Hurricane Parents! You will begin to see HCC at sporting events throughout the school year. We are looking forward to participating in these events and to meet new community members. If you are interested in volunteering at one or more sports games with HCC, please email Amie at amiew@hccvt.org.

Some e-cigarette manufacturers have used a similar strategy to market e-cigarettes that tobacco companies used for decades to sell cigarettes: advertising them as stress relievers. In fact, research shows nicotine use can increase stress levels, symptoms of anxiety, and feelings of depression.

Tips: Transitioning Back to School |
Going back to school can be both an exciting and challenging time for a family. However, mental health needs in youth may become more apparent as academic demands and social interactions increase through the fall. Here are some things we can do to help our children, families, and ourselves through this time: - Establish a daily routine early, which includes time for homework, dinner, and bedtime.
- Having clear expectations may help reduce the stress and anxiety that kids experience. Take time to check in with one another. Making time to talk together about the things we're worried, confused, or excited about gives us opportunities to give and receive support, and to get ahead of potential problems before they happen.
- Connecting with other families is another great way to get support and exchange ideas on how to navigate transitioning back to school.
- Sports, clubs, and extracurricular activities help youth feel connected and can go a long way in promoting good mental health.
- Sometimes we need the support of a professional to teach us ways to help our children through mental health challenges.
