Happy (belated) New Year!
It's been a bit since I've written a true intro to our monthly newsletter and as we launch into 2023, I'd like to share some reflections:2022 was an intense year both globally and in the EA community. Many good things happened in EA in support of good things happening in the world at large, and the most valuable—and most underrated—posts of 2022 on the EA Forum reflect much of the zeitgeist of the past year: world-improving direct work, exciting ideas for future projects, deep introspection and reflection, and a persistent optimism that merged with a culture of self-improvement to together produce a belief in the power of EA to both better itself and better the world. In the first weeks of 2023, I've been having a number of conversations with new and longtime community members and I'm seeing a common thread of uncertainty: What am I doing with my life? How can I have an impact? Can I have an impact? Is the EA community right for me? What is the EA community and what does it stand for? If you're feeling uncertain right now, in ways big or small, you are not alone. And though we don't have all the answers, the EA NYC team is here. We can serve as a compassionate ear, a sounding board, and a brainstorming partner. We're here to talk about everything from your career path to you community health concerns. (Seriously, our EA NYC Community Health Coordinator, Megan, is phenomenal and a confidential resource.) And we want to hear from you! We're here as resources for any questions or concerns you might have in your journey to doing good better. Please don't hesitate to reach out via email or schedule a call with us. Uncertainty can feel scary, but it is also an opportunity. And we want to support you in making the most of that opportunity.
P.S. Shout-out to Alex, the force behind our monthly newsletter! If you have ideas for future editions, shoot them an email!

In Replacing Guilt, Nate Soares articulates a framework for seeing the world as it is and taking effective action — without putting half your work into beating yourself up.
In the work, Soares describes different approaches one might take towards life: The slackers fail to deploy their full strength because they realize that the quality line is not their preference curve.
The triers deploy their full strength at the wrong target, in attempts to go as far right as possible, wasting energy on a fight that is not theirs.
But Soares advocates for a third path: remembering what you’re fighting for. Always deploying your full strength, in order to hit your quality target as fast as possible.
The book is available with a "pay what you want structure" on its website, or available as an audiobook for free through common podcasting apps. You can register for our discussion here.
Make sure to join the #reading-group channel on the EA NYC Slack to discuss throughout the month. Stick around since that's where we decide on the next book coming soon!
