Arkansas State University Congratulations to Dr. Mohammad Abrar Alam, professor of chemistry at Arkansas State University, on receiving an R15 grant from the NIH National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research for his proposal, “Systematic Functional Genomics Analysis of the Oral Pathogen Streptococcus Mutans.”
From the proposal: Tooth decay is very prevalent in the US and a leading cause of the disease is the oral bacterium Streptococcus mutans. In this project we will construct a powerful new genetic tool, a sequence-defined transposon mutant library, that can be applied to identify genetic determinants of S. mutans pathogenicity. The results of this project could lead to the discovery of important genetic factors required for S. mutans to cause tooth decay, and lead to new approaches to control S. mutans infections. More |

Lyon College Congratulations to Dr. Irosha Nawarathne on her recent promotion to Full Professor at Lyon College. AR INBRE is proud to have supported Dr. Nawarathne in her research efforts and recognize her strong commitment to exposing undergrad students to biomedical research. She has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards including 2025 WCC Rising Star Award for excellence in the scientific enterprise from the American Chemical Society. Since 2015, Dr. Nawarathne has mentored 54 undergrads. Under her mentorship students have won 15 awards for their research excellence at various research conferences, including recognition by the Goldwater National Scholarship Program. University of Arkansas-Little Rock Armin writes, “I’ve been accepted into the Medical Scholars in Public Health Program at UAMS, where I will spend the next year completing the first half of a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. The following year, I plan to begin medical school and complete the remaining MPH coursework concurrently. My long-term goal is to graduate with both an MD and MPH, combining clinical medicine with a strong foundation in public health.” |

Left to right are: Naia Efird, Avery Gilkey, Stephanie Long, and Hannah-Grace Fritz. Post UCA, Naia will be starting optometry school in Kentucky, Avery is taking a gap year, Stephanie will be starting PA school at UAMS, and Hannah-Grace will start graduate school (M.S. thesis-track, Biology in my lab) at UCA.” |

IDeA National Resource Proteomics Voucher Program – due June 15 Vouchers are designed to support a 10-plex TMT or up to 40 sample DIA analysis, which are common types of service requests with adequate statistical power. R16 NOFO Announcement – May 28 Deadline Cancelled |
From the SuRE Resource Center: We have heard from NIGMS that the NOFOs for the R16 SuRE (PAR-24-144) and SuRE-First (PAR-24-145) grant applications will expire on May 24. Because of this, applications for the May 28 due date will not be accepted. Details have been published in the following Notice (NOT-OD-25-113), which lists a large number of NOFOs in addition to those for R16 grants. Unfortunately, we have no further information at this time.
For those of you who have been actively preparing an application, we encourage you to continue working with your faculty mentors and monitoring Grants.gov for updates and potential new NOFOs, including those for R16 grants. You may also consider using the time to prepare manuscripts for publications — research productivity, as judged by publications, always strengthens grant applications.
Please reach out to us (the SuRE Resource Center) with any questions. We will continue to provide support through consultations and webinars. In addition, we will continue to communicate with NIH program staff and share any future updates we receive in a timely manner. |

For those with NSF funding: Rapid Response Bridge Funding Program. In the face of recent abrupt shifts in federal funding for education research, including large-scale terminations of NSF research grant awards, the Spencer Foundation has developed a rapid response bridge grant opportunity for impacted scholars, in collaboration with The Kapor Foundation, The William T. Grant Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. This rapid response bridge funding opportunity is for scholars and teams whose grants have recently been cancelled by NSF. These $25,000 grants are for activities to address immediate needs following grant cancellations, including completing a wave of data collection, analyzing already collected data or writing, thoughtful project closure with community partners, or preparing grant proposals to continue the research. Full proposals due May 30 30 and June 13. More
