New headteacher appointed for Central

We’re delighted to announce the appointment of our deputy headteacher Mrs Sarah Wellington as the new headteacher of Central Academy from September.
We also have great pleasure in confirming the appointment of Mrs Sophie Watkins as the new headteacher of Bothal Academy. Mrs Watkins will join us in September from Morpeth Road Academy in Blyth, where she is currently deputy headteacher.
Both Mrs Wellington and Mrs Watkins have extensive leadership experience across a range of settings and will be great additions to our senior leadership teams in their new positions. The senior leadership changes follow Central and Bothal joining WISE Academies Multi Academy Trust last month. Morpeth Road Academy is also one of the trust’s academies. Miss Hall will continue to support the schools as Regional Director for WISE Academies.

Awesome time with Rock Kidz on tour

Central Academy were very lucky to be visited by Jonathan and Paige from Rock Kidz this week, who delivered some fantastic workshops about celebrating our differences and being proud of who we are.

As part of these workshops, children learnt a new song called ‘Nobody Like Me’ and took part in dance, air guitar and singing battles. They also taught us the word YASBA, meaning ‘you’re awesome so be awesome’ and reminded us of the importance of telling ourselves this regularly.

The Hub pupils were fantastic at cheering on their classmates and teachers during the dance battle and air guitar competition!

See the Rock Kidz reels on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Teacher Training Day

A reminder to parents that Central Academy has a Teacher Training Day on Friday May 22 - in line with WISE Academies term dates.

Curriculum Spotlight: Music

This summer term, pupils will explore and have opportunities to learn the glockenspiel, keyboard and recorder. They will also have opportunities to learn a wider range of instruments through our after school clubs and from our peripatetic teachers, Mr Muckle and Mr O:

• Year 1 will be learning two new songs, Round and Round/Your Imagination and exploring Latin bossa nova, pop and music from films and musicals.
• Year 2 will be focusing on a song called Friendship Song and completing a special unit of work linked to the Royal Ballet and Opera.
• In Year 3, pupils will be exploring music from around the world through The Dragon Song and disco-themed learning.
• Year 4 will be studying gospel music through the song Lean on Me, and developing their vocal skills.
• Year 5 will learn The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and explore the musical styles of hip hop and Motown.
• Year 6 will focus on the music of Carole King, studying her work through the song You’ve Got a Friend.

There are many ways you can support music learning at home, including: listening to music together; singing songs together; creating homemade instruments; encouraging movement to music; and talking about music in everyday life.

Plucking up the courage to play the ukulele

Still on the music theme and Year 5 have been learning to play the ukelele. Our young players now know all the strings and can play some chords too. It takes real concentration to play in time to the music. Watch 5BT on this video - click on the image above or here...

Who's been sitting in my chair?

It's all about proportion...

In 6SW, the children have been learning about ratio and proportion this week. In this lesson, they used their knowledge of multiplication and division to solve ratio problems with missing values and used cubes to prove their answers.

FREE Transition Session – Supporting Year 6 into Secondary School

Newcastle United Foundation is delivering a Year 6 Transition Session designed to support boys and girls as they prepare to move from primary to secondary school.
Taking place at Hirst Welfare, the session will offer a safe, relaxed and welcoming environment where young people can build confidence, make new friends and take part in a range of fun activities. Alongside small sided games, there will be opportunities to enjoy PlayStation challenges, team building tasks and other creative activities that help develop communication and social skills.

The aim is to help Year 6 pupils feel more prepared, comfortable and excited about the move to secondary school by giving them a positive space to connect, have fun and learn new things.
