Welcome to my first in a new series of newsletters about all things hip and knee.
In this series I'd like to share my evidence-based approach to doing more with less joint pain.
I want to help more people to understand their hip and knee pain. However, I also have a more personal reason for writing this, which should become clear with this story…
It’s a story of a middle-aged man. A man who limped into my clinic room with right hip pain.
The story's quite typical. At 48 years of age, he has a young family, enjoys his day job and has always been quite active. He used to play rugby. And now cycling and running are ‘his thing’.
Over recent years an achy 'clicky' right hip has also become ‘his thing’. And he thinks about it a lot…
When he doesn’t get pain, he feels great and does whatever he wants.
When he does gets pain, he feels limited, older than his years, and wonders if the pain will ever go away.
So far, the pain has always got better. But will that happen the next time his hip flares up?
That’s a common story.
A lot of people suffer with hip pain.
So, an achy ‘clicky’ right hip is not that uncommon. However, I’m telling you that story first up, to explain my passionate interest in hip (and knee) pain…
That middle-aged man who walked into the clinic room…  is ME.
I sit down behind the desk in my clinic room as a hip surgeon who really does get hip pain.
As ironic as that sounds, it's not that surprising or that unusual. Perhaps 1 in 5 of us will suffer with hip pain at some point in our lives.
What that awareness of my achy ‘clicky’ right hip has done is give me a real life sense of how joint pain plays into, and takes over, everyday life.
And that awareness- 'I get hip pain'- was the first step to doing more with less pain. And it's the key take away from this first newsletter. I tell myself:
"I get hip pain. Don't dismiss it. Now, what do I do about it?"
I'm a surgeon who specialises in hip (and knee) replacement, and I'm now fully aware of my own hip pain, Evidence based actions have helped me. And I now want to help more people than I can see in clinic...
I want to shout about the evidence and experience from my day job that's worked for me. Those key things that have helped me to do more of the things I love with less pain.
In this series of newsletters, I’ll share the evidence-based approach to doing more with less joint pain. And I'll talk about why I want to put off joint replacement for as long as I can/ And how I plan to go about it.
Thanks for reading this far. Please help me as I get started...
