End of the Year ~ Thank You! |
It's been quite a year, but since this is the final Lakeview family newsletter for the 2023-24 school year, it contains many important items for next school year. Please read carefully. We will leave this newsletter linked on the Lakeview homepage for the summer until we send another update, in case you need to find this information again in the coming months. THANK YOU! We've had so many memorable moments this year, including • Launching our Walking School Bus (remember this video?)• Our new book machine - a gift from our amazing PTO• 1000 Golden Lions and Mr. Sepersky's haircut• Innovative learning through urban planning (remember this video ... and this article?)• 5th grade camp, PTO dances and events, field trips, and so much moreOne of our school goals for this year was that 100% of students view themselves as learners and have positive relationships with peers. Our teachers have re-imagined learning this year and the future is bright. 92.4% of our students answered "I am a learner." Our urban planning project is just the beginning. We will continue to innovate to build independent learners who are beautiful human beings connected to their community. Thank you to YOU - our families - who are our children's first teachers. Enjoy your summer!

Last Week of School Activities |

As another year comes to a close, we are excited to celebrate our 5th graders who are closing the "Lakeview chapter" of their stories. It is usually well-attended, so arrive early. The event is less than 30 minutes and will have simple refreshments, thanks to our Lakeview PTO.

Field day is on Thursday afternoon, June 6th. Mr. Walters and his volunteers have organized several Olympic events to celebrate the end of the 2023-24 school year. Be sure your student(s) wear running shoes that day. Depending on the weather, you will want to send sunscreen and a hat for your child(ren). However, please note that students must be able to put on their own sunscreen.

Yearbook distribution will happen on the last day of school. Please talk to your child about how to treat their own yearbook with respect as well as that of other students. We do not have extra yearbooks on hand to replace damaged or vandalized copies. Our teachers talk extensively with students about showing respect to each other's yearbooks prior to distribution.
|
|
|
Chromebooks and chargers will be collected from all students in K-4 the last week of school. 5th grade will keep their Chromebooks over the summer (unless you are going to a different middle school next year).

Need to get in touch with us this summer?
The best way to reach the office at Lakeview over the summer is to send an email. Our emails are found on the Lakeview homepage. The office is closed until early August, so if you call and leave a voicemail, it may not be returned until August. Mr. Sepersky is available by email throughout the summer.

We have one favor to ask you this summer: Please make reading a daily habit throughout the summer! What happens when you stop exercising? Not only do we get out of shape, but then it gets harder to restart our exercise routines. The same thing happens to our learners. They lose some of the learning "muscle" they have built up this year and teachers need to spend more time building up positive habits in September. The good news is that it doesn't take much to maintain those reading skills in June, July, and August! 30 minutes a day for young students (4K-1st) and 45+ minutes a day for older students (2nd-5th) would allow your child to start the next school year well and learn even more next year! Here is a link to the South Milwaukee Public Library summer reading program if you need some incentives. Don't forget that reading aloud to your child counts as well! Do you have a preschool age child at home? The four best things you can do for them every day are:
1. Read to your child 2. Talk to your child 3. Sing to your child 4. Give your child social experiences The more you can do each of these, the better. If you do those four things very well from birth to age 4, your child will be on the right track for K-12 school, college, and beyond!

Each year, we have a few staff leaving and joining. As 2023-24 comes to a close, we bid a fond farewell to Mrs. Hanneman (11 years) and Mrs. Giera (25 years). Many of you have been touched by these two amazing educators. This would be a great week to send them a quick note congratulating them on their well-deserved retirement! Mrs. Zoellner is saying goodbye to Lakeview, but not to South Milwaukee, as she is moving to Blakewood. Ms. Almanza, one of our 2nd grade teachers, is taking an opportunity to teach middle school students in another district. We wish them both well!

Who is my teacher next year?
• We will follow the same procedure as recent school years. If you have registered in Infinite Campus online by August 16, you will receive a postcard in the mail with your classroom teacher's name before Open House. If you do not complete online registration, you will not receive a postcard. This means that the only way you will find out your child's teacher in advance is by completing online registration. Online registration opens in mid-June (watch your email). We will not post class lists on the front doors to ensure student privacy & security. • Please note that we do not take family requests for particular teachers. All of our teachers are excellent at Lakeview! Families should not assume that because they had a particular teacher in the past that their next child will have the same teacher. With only two sections per grade level, this may have happened by chance over the years, but it is not something we take into account. If you are not returning to Lakeview, please let us know and register with your new school as soon as possible so the new school can request your child(ren)'s records.
