HEALING THE HEART DHARMA
Our Global Sangha practises a Dharma of healing the heart. The Global Sangha came into existence as a response to the pandemic. People were lonely or stressed by the circumstances of the lockdown and the pressure on medical facilities. Reaching out to one another, a sangha formed, giving mutual support across national boundaries. Now that crisis is fading, but we find ourselves in new difficulties with war in Europe and Africa and elsewhere, polarisation within populations and between political groups, it is a time of tearing apart. Thus the concern to heal the heart. The same mutual support that sustained us through the pandemic now refocusses upon the need to overcome these rifts.
The troubled heart may be lonely or confused. On a foundation of Buddhist wisdom drawn from the Pure Land tradition, we have created a sangha which is broad and inclusive, incorporating such elements of Naikan, Qi Gong, Buddhist Psychology, Zen, Sufism, Hinduism, Taoism and other traditions as are compatible with this general aim of restoring faith in the heart and expressing that renewed confidence through body, speech and mind, heart and soul.
This is an integrative rather than an eclectic approach. The three nembutsu principles provide a unifying foundation. These are, firstly, reverence for the source of grace, which we call Amida. Secondly, the bombu nature of the practitioner - recognition of human limitations, fallibility and vulnerability. Thirdly, the practice of calling the Name as bridge between the two.
These three pillars then support a broad, welcoming framework and a warm and supportive community. The first step, for many, is the acceptance of bombu nature - the imperfect state of the human being, ourselves. This is not a path for constructing a perfected self, but rather of escaping from and giving up such pretension. Inasmuch as one does so, one becomes aware of the bounty - social, material and spiritual - that one benefits from. Gratitude arises. One gives thanks. These thanks may be directed to other beings, but finally to the ultimate source - Amida. This is a turning around in one's attitude to life. Instead of seeking to do everything by one's own power, one recognises a greater and allows this to guide and comfort the heart and mind. This is a generic form of spirituality. It is also the mystical heart of Buddhism. Respect for the universal Dharma Nature, free from judgementalism or exclusive claims to special virtue. Energy arises and one can then deploy and express this in numerous ways in the service of truth, beauty and peace for all. Namo Amida Bu.

Namo Amida Bu.
HEALING THE HEART
In the time of tearing apart
address the healing of the heart.
In the deepest soul foundation
one must make an excavation.
Deep in the origin of all,
a silence reigns: a mystic call.
Uncontrived, without bound,
it is the universal ground
from which springs authenticity,
beatitude and sanctity.
The holy cannot be possessed,
but seen, known, and witnessed.
It is a stillness beyond fear,
a heart that’s free, mind that’s clear.
I do not know it’s name or clan,
for it was before the world began.
It shall be when the world is passed
Those who endure hold it fast.
Upon the truth it is the seal.
Of the ship of life, it is the keel.
Just stop, do nothing, you will find
the calm foundation of the mind.
In that peace, undefended,
naturally, the heart is mended.
ELEUSIS NEWS
David: The bookshop talk was a very pleasant occasion. Copies of the Italian book were sold and afterwards we went to a restaurant with the bookshop owners with much good conversation. A friend of many of us from Korea is visiting Italy and has spent a few days with us, so we have been doing some sight-seeing. On Sunday I gave a seminar (see the poem earlier in the Newsletter).
