Background: Zarifa earned a B.Ed. in Elementary Education and an M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from the University of Dhaka. She earned a Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, specializing in Educational Psychology from North Carolina State University (NCSU). Her Ph.D. work emphasized improving the collaboration quality in elementary computer science classrooms and exploring the motivation of underrepresented students in STEM. After graduation, she evaluated educational outcomes of educational technologies for a startup in the Research Triangle.
Current Role: Zarifa has shifted her research focus to teaching-learning dynamics in data science as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Data Science Academy at NCSU. In addition to her research, Zarifa supports evaluation efforts on data science education programs.

OpportunitiesCompetitions and Calls for Papers or SpeakersGrants, Fellowships, and Scholarships- The Social Science Research Council for its Just Tech Fellowship. Fellows receive 2-year awards of $100,000 annually. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The last day to submit application materials is Jan. 31 at 11:59pm EST.
- The University of Washington is accepting applications from undergraduate seniors and graduate students for its 2024 Data Science for Social Good program which will take place Jun. 10 - Aug. 16. Apply by Feb. 12.
- The Moynihan Public Service Fellowship for undergraduates is accepting applications for the 2024-25 cohort. Fellows will receive a $5,000 stipend during the school year and up to $5,000 to support an internship during the summer.
- The Gulf Research Program is accepting applications for its Science Policy Fellowship. Fellows who have an MA/MS/MPH/MSPH or be currently enrolled in a doctoral program, for an annual stipend of $58,000. Fellows who have completed a PhD/ScD/EngD/MD/DrPH/DVM will receive an annual stipend of $63,000. Apply by Feb. 7.
- The NSF invites proposal submissions for workshops, planning grants, or the creation of translational research coordination networks on AI, biotech, or natural and anthropogenic disaster prevention or mitigation for its Responsible Design, Development, and Deployment of Technologyes (ReDDDoT) program. Register for an informational webinar on Feb. 9 at 2pm EST to learn more. Phase 1 proposals are due Apr. 8.
- The Michigan Institute for Data Science at the University of Michigan is accepting applications for the Data and AI Intensive Research with Rigor and Reproducibility (DAIR3) program. Trainees will then be guided over a one-year period to incorporate the newly acquired mindset, skills and tools into their research; and develop training for their own institutions. Apply by Feb. 29.
Internships- The Roux Institute at Northeastern University invites undergraduate and graduate level students in engineering, data visualization/human data interaction, life sciences and medicine, and computer science to apply for an approximate 10-week summer research internship in Portland, ME. Apply by Feb. 15.
- ADP launched an 8-week training program for undergraduate and graduate students (expected graduation May 2024) which could result in a full-time position.
- Salesforce is accepting applications from PhD students for an internship in AI Research for PhD and master’s candidates and Software Engineering for a student working towards their bachelor’s.
- Meta’s Reality Labs posted multiple internships for PhD students specializing in audio presence, hearing and auditory perception, auditory ux, audio, ML, and computer vision, and spatial audio capture and reproduction.
- The Teachable AI Experiences team at Microsoft Research Cambridge (UK) is looking to hire a PhD intern with expertise in human-computer interaction to direct and contextualize ML research. The same team is hiring an PhD ML intern to deepen its understanding of the capabilities of multi-modal models, with a particular focus on image-text models.
Postdocs- Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences seeks a postdoc for a 3-year position beginning asap to model the vertical transport of carbon by marine zooplankton. Screening of candidates will begin Jan. 22 and continue until the position is filled.
