And for younger readers, another study of 7000 x 20–24-year-olds showed:
- 25 or 50/minute for men
- 24 or 47/minute for women.
Okay, so it’s not as simple as do this test and live longer! But the implications are super interesting..
6x more likely..
One further study in 2012- of 51- to 80-year-olds- found those ‘who scored low on the test were 5x to 6x more likely to die over the next 6 years (than those who scored high).
BUT I prefer to write that the other way around..
Score HIGH and you’re 5x to 6x LESS likely to die.
Jugdeep Dhesi, a consultant geriatrician at Guy's and St Thomas' explained..
"You want to avoid 'bungalow legs' [i.e. weak legs from living in a single-storey home]
“..essentially you want to make sure you can carry on going up and down stairs using those muscles, maintaining your balance, and remaining independent..”
We know higher activity levels and strength lead to better outcomes for those of us with hip or knee pain.
So, could it be that our hips and knees are trying to tell us something..?
Guiding us on how to live longer. Perhaps..
All we have to do is listen 👊
