Roomie Review July 26th 2024 |
The one where I tell you all about how I haven't slept in 11 years, and also about how we spent the last week moving but remained in the same house at the end of it all.

Well, I finally did it, guys. I finally convinced my husband it was time to move. But wait... why are we still in the same house? That's a good question.
If you've been here for a while, you know about Rocky, my four-year-old lab cross who suffers from seizures. And if you know me at all, you know I suffer from a pretty high level of anxiety, especially when it comes to Rocky. Well, did you also know I've been sleeping on the couch most nights for over a year because of Rocky's seizures?
Mine and my husband's bedroom has been downstairs for a while because when the kids were little I wanted them on the same floor, and it wasn't possible at the time to have them both downstairs. But being downstairs meant either Rocky had to be down there too (which we did for a while, but when he has a seizure, his legs don't work well and carrying an 80 pound dog up a flight of stairs is tricky) or I had to be upstairs. To keep it easier on the dog's legs (and my husband's back), I elected to sleep on the couch most of the time. Now, our couch is pretty comfy, but it's not the greatest for sleeping, and I've been clocking somewhere around 5 hours of broken sleep a night for the last year.
I came up with the idea that it was time to move the kids downstairs and us upstairs, but there was one huge issue. The room where I had my office also functioned as our storage room (truthfully it was more storage than office). And we had a lot of stuff stored. Initially we thought we'd only move one kid downstairs, and keep my office and storage room in the same space, but that meant the other kid felt left out (and for good reason, the second upstairs bedroom is tiny, and the other kid would have had a HUGE room in comparison). Luckily, after a lot of thought, my husband figured it out.
After four days of running up and down stairs, taking apart and rebuilding furniture, and packing and moving our belongings as though we were actually moving to a new house, we're settled into our new rooms. Both kids have huge downstairs rooms, the downstairs living room area is now doubling as a storage area, and our bedroom is back in the upstairs master room. Not only that, now my office is my office. I mean, it has a futon in it, in case we have overnight guests, but it's upstairs, which makes it a lot easier for me to work and to watch the dogs, especially Rocky, when he's having one of his bad days.
I have to tell you, though, the body that I've built with years of neglect, inadequate sleep, and overeating for the dopamine, is not made for climbing stairs that many times in a series of four days. I had to take off my shoes for an appointment today, and just bending my knee to take off my sneaker caused a debilitating cramp in the back of my thigh. That was the most mortifying thing to happen until five minutes later when I had to press the emergency escape button during and MRI when I discovered, after being earmuffed, blindfolded and stuffed into a tube, that I'm a wee bit claustrophobic. I managed to finish the MRI, thanks only to the tech standing beside me with her hand on my leg the whole time, and then I got to come home and do some work in my new office. So...win some, lose some?

We've got a birthday in the Roome house this weekend! It's a big weekend here for us, one of the kids is turning 11! When I tell you I haven't slept in 11 years, this kid is the reason why. She's never been a great sleeper, and I've always slept that half-sleep where you try not to sleep too deeply so you can still hear what's going on around you. It's also a big weekend, because we're hosting our first sleepover. The kid decided on having a small party with just a couple of friends. She wants to go swimming, get Boba on the way home, have pizza (takeout, not homemade like we usually do), and then just chill with her friends until they go to sleep, which is where she lost me.

When I was a kid, my birthday party sleepovers had tons of kids. We'd all lay sleeping bags out in the living room, play party games, watch movies, and eat way too much junk food. These kids are just going to hang out? Seems weird to me, but that's what the kid wants to do, and it's way less expensive than the stuff we usually do for parties, so I'll take it.
The party and sleepover doesn't matter much, anyway. The real fun will come the next day when I take her to spend all her birthday money at the bookstore. This kid loves her some graphic novels.
