Welcome back to The 90%!
"90% perfect and shared with the world always changes more lives than 100% perfect and stuck in your head." Jon Acuff, Quitter: Closing the Gap Between Your Day Job and Your Dream Job
Perspiration

Last week, I had the opportunity to hear Magic Johnson speak on business and basketball. The Laker legend held court (excuse the pun) for 90 minutes, sharing stories, answering questions, and dispersing advice, all with his signature smile. Now a billionaire, Magic has numerous business interests and is part owner of MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers, the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks, the MLS' Los Angeles FC, and the NFL's Washington Commanders. Here are a few of the insights he shared with us:
  • In both basketball and business, discipline has been the key to my success.
  • As a point guard, I learned how to work with people, and it's a skill I still use today.
  • Upon entering the business world, I asked, "How can I make money AND make a difference?"
  • When considering opportunities, sometimes you have to say, "No. I'm not ready. I have to get better."
  • Money is not going to wake you up. Passion and love for what you do will wake you up in the morning.
  • You have to understand your customer and over-deliver.
  • I can be led, even though I'm a leader.
  • My business targets are growth, scale, and sustainability.
Inspiration

As a teenager, golfer Nelly Korda was chatting with Hall of Famer Hollis Stacy, who shared this nugget - When the time is right. Korda said, "That [conversation] made me very present, and that made me think more of golf is a shot at a time, not to get too ahead of myself, and when the time is right, it'll happen because I put in the work." The time is certainly right for Korda, who just won her fifth LPGA tournament in a row, something only Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam have achieved.

While acknowledging the nerves of the moment, she strives to keep things simple. Some of this mindset comes from her parents - both former professional tennis players. Their advice - Enjoy the moment. Make the most of the situation. Time passes quickly. She also embraces the feelings that arise in the heat of battle. “Those moments, I just love the intensity. Afterward, you feel really sick because you’re like, I just went through a million emotions in the past four hours. But that’s what I love. I strive to be in that position as many times as possible. That’s what I work for.”

Korda doesn't just love the intensity; she also loves the hard work required to succeed. She's worked hard both on the course and to return from injuries and health scares. Through the recovery process, she learned to stay patient and avoid comparing herself to others. When you hear her speak, the immense gratitude she has for her family and team shines through. They have stuck by her side through the highs and lows, allowing her to do what she loves to do - play golf, compete, and inspire the next generation. Stay tuned to find out when she'll tee it up again.
Preparation

Kintsugi (kin - gold, tsugi - joinery) is the Japanese art of restoring broken pottery with lacquer. Rather than hide the cracks, artisans decorate the cracks with powdered gold, creating beauty out of brokenness. While high performers often pursue perfection, it can lead to discontent and a lack of self-acceptance. The internal narrative of perfection can lead to thinking, "If I could only fix _____, then I'll be happy." Instead, consider changing the narrative. Embrace and appreciate flaws and imperfections as part of your story, knowing that they can lead to resilience, strength, and beauty.
