High School Dropoff and Pickup |
All students should enter Door 29 |
|
As we approach the start of a new school year, we want to let you know of a few changes to the drop off and pick up procedures at the High School.
Improving student safety and addressing the traffic on 15th Avenue was one of our goals of the 2024 Safe, Supported, and Successful referendum that the community supported in the spring.
Using some referendum dollars, we hired a company to conduct a traffic and safety study that resulted in a number of recommendations to improve safety and congestion along 15th Avenue.
Drop Off This year all high school students will enter the building through Door 29 (Gym entrance), from 7:00-7:30 a.m. No other doors will be open for students to enter the building. Families dropping students off will need to use Oak Creek Parkway and proceed to the east side of the building and enter through the circle drive (Rocket John Way) to drop students off. Students who are parking in the student lot for the day will need to enter through the athletic field driveway. This process will be the same for picking up students at the end of the school day. At 7:30 a.m., Door 29 will be locked, and any remaining students will then have to enter through Door 9. No student admission will be allowed at Door 9 prior to 7:30 a.m.
Pick Up Students being picked up will exit through Door 29, families picking up students will use the circle drive, and students exiting the parking lot will use the athletic field driveway. Students who walk at the end of the day may exit out of Door 9 (Main Office Entrance). South Milwaukee staff will be present to help direct traffic and ample signage will be available to help everyone as we make this transition. Please know that this change was given careful consideration and we believe is in the best interest of the safety and care of the students and families.

New hours for elementary schools |
School starts at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m. |
When students return to school on September 3rd, South Milwaukee elementary schools will start and end a little earlier.
Thanks to the response from parents in a survey in the spring, it was decided elementary students at Blakewood, E. W. Luther, Lakeview, and Rawson elementary schools should be in their classrooms and ready to go at 8:15 a.m. each day. The day will end a little earlier, too. Students will be dismissed at 3:20 p.m. each day.

SMWay Podcast: STEM for the Elementary Schools |
In this episode we talk about the district’s new STEM program for elementary students. But in a bigger sense we’re talking about engaging curiosity in a hands-on way to look at something and learn how it works and why – or better yet, to build something and figure out how to make it work.
We're excited to introduce you to our STEM teachers who are on an exploration of their own – building a new program from the ground up, fueled by the natural curiosity of our youngest students.
