Beaver Protection Bill to Support
This is a busy time in the legislative session, and we want to keep you informed about bills that support and protect our wildlife. Please take a moment to read HB 1530 to learn how this legislation will help beavers and the ecosystems that depend on them.
This legislation will help protect our busy beavers, whose work is vital to healthy ecosystems. Beavers create wetlands that improve water quality, reduce flooding, recharge groundwater, and provide habitat for countless species of birds, fish, amphibians, and mammals.

HB 1530 would require landowners, in non-emergency situations, to notify abutters, local governing bodies, and conservation commissions at least 30 days before removing or significantly lowering a shared beaver impoundment. The bill also requires a public informational meeting at least 15 days prior to action. Referred to the House Resources, Recreation, and Development Committee, HB 1530 helps ensure transparency and gives impacted landowners and the public a voice, recognizing that beaver dam removal can have unintended downstream and upstream consequences.

If you are able to attend the hearing, please do. It will be held at 1 Granite Place, Room 228, at 3:15 pm on Wednesday, January 14. Beaver protection bills are often difficult to pass due to conflicting land-use concerns and misconceptions about beaver impacts. Showing up, whether to testify or simply be present, helps demonstrate public support and reminds lawmakers that beavers provide real ecological benefits.
Thank you for being a voice for beavers!
