|
For the month of April we are celebrated three international health days. World Autism Awareness Day (April 2nd), World Parkinson's Day (April 11th) and @World Health Day with the theme 'Health For All', acknowledging the 75th anniversary of WHO, April 7th. #HealthForAll #WHO75

|
"If you find out I am Autistic, this is what I want you to know..." As part of the celebrations, we invited Joel, who is one of our NDIS participants who lives with autism
to share his experiences with us. Joel is nineteen years old, loves to go to the gym, read books and attend church social groups.
FUTURE GOAL: Joel is studying to become a primary school teacher!

What would you like people to know if they found out that you are Autistic? "I would like everyone to understand autism, with having developed a strategy of communicating this effectively. In the case where I meet someone new, I would usually tell them that I have autism, as I am quite happy to explain, so they understand and if they meet someone else who has autism or something similar they have an awareness."
What are some of the challenges you have faced growing up with Autism? "Some of the challenges I have faced growing up with autism include problem solving, organisation, completing domestic tasks and being confident in social settings. Sometimes these challenges present difficulties for me when understanding what is right and wrong when completing a task in the community or at home."
How did you overcome these challenges and is there any advice you would give to others who may experience something similar? "Although I am still working on overcoming these challenges, I receive continuous support from my family which has been extremely important to me and also working with my occupational therapist and therapy assistant from OTSG, where they provide ongoing support in building my skills at home and in the community. I also receive professional help from a speech therapist and support workers that assist me in completing daily living activities within the community." Thank you Joel for sharing your story and celebrating World Autism Awareness day with us! 🤩

CHOICES, CONNECTION AND SUPPORT
This month, we asked our social media followers, team, clients and friends a little controversial question... "Is Thermomix® reasonable and necessary?" on our socials.
🔔We listened and here are the results.
|
|
With only 9% of responses suggesting that the Thermomix is not reasonable and necessary... We asked ourselves what benefits the Thermomix might provide for NDIS participants! The Thermomix can be a powerful tool for people with disabilities. It facilitates greater independence in the kitchen, providing 'AI support' in place of care, and making it a cost effective tool! The Thermomix provides an abundance of healthy dietary choices and meal plans, that support people living with physical or cognitive limitations and can support those living with limited or difficulty swallowing. It comes as just one kitchen appliance with in-built safety mechanisms! Are you considering a Thermomix to support yourself or someone you know to achieve greater independence with meals? If so, we've got a solution for you! Come and see the benefit at our next Masterclass ... |

Building Friendships We have been working closely with Building Friendships over recent weeks. So this month, we had a chat with Jodie, Office Manager at Building Friendships and asked her to share more about the organisation, the services they provide and some of their achievements.
|
|
|
What has been your biggest achievement and favourite event so far?
"To see a positive change in an individual where they interact and engage in more conversations, step outside of their comfort zone and try new things, such as different foods, is very rewarding. Although there is no particular event that stands out, each time the group partakes in an activity it is a great fun day or evening with so many happy smiling faces and also seeing members of the public engaging with the group and interacting and having fun with the group."
What's your point of difference?
"We provide social and community participation for people 18 years and over and who are often in a transitional phase after leaving school, or needing support in maintaining and making new friends. We listen to our clients to provide a program of activities that they wish to participate in and stay engaged."
How did Building Friendships all start? "Building Friendships started in late 2018 when the Director, Dianne recognised that there was little to no offerings within the community for adults to safely engage with others and feel part of the wider community. Many parents commented on their concerns for their child as they develop to early adulthood and increase in social activities and awareness. Through this feedback, the company was established and grew from 4 clients and 2 staff to now over 60 clients and 17 staff."How do I make a referral for a client or who should I contact if I am interested?
"Contact via email on admin@buildingfriendhships.com.au and a team member will get in touch to discuss your needs. Alternatively, check out the website for more information www.buildingfriendships.com.au regarding our program of activities."
What's your favourite activity or hobby you engage in?
"Personally it would be time spent with family, usually camping. As a parent of two young adults with disabilities, I see the value in spending quality time together, enjoying each other’s company and trying new things and visiting new places."

We recently posted about the @Steadiwear on our socials to showcase one of the many AT products we have at the @Solutions Centre. We received lots of engagement and some of our clients asked us "What is the Steadiwear", "How much is it" and "If I have a tremor, would my independence be improved by using the Steadiwear?"
The Steadiwear (steadi-two) is a weighted glove, designed to reduce hand tremors. It is lightweight and can be adjusted depending on the level of tremor. One of the main features is the vibration absorber, which is designed on proven earthquake technology. The absorber is powered by magnets and moves in the opposite direction of your tremor, assisting in hand stabilisation.
This product is a low risk/ low cost item and depending where they are purchased online, the price can vary between $1100 to $1400.
The Steadi-Two is best suited for persons who have Essential Tremors in the wrist and forearm. However, we recommend you to to come try the assistive device before purchasing it at our Solutions Centre, as one of out Occupational Therapists can assist with deciding whether it's right for you.
Please note: the products at the solutions centre are not for sale, they are for trial only (no food is permitted to use while trailing kitchen items).
Please let us know if you would like to come into the solutions Centre for a FREE trial. For more information and enquires about our services please contact us on (08) 9332 1783 or info@oterservicesgroup.com
