We have just taken charge of these three brand new oils of mine, each a celebration of Spring. They are all varnished and hanging in the Gallery, so do come and have a look at them, and all the other fabulous new ones by all our artists that are adorning PBFA walls!
Swans are such beautiful birds, and I placed this pair at Duddington just off centre for the sake of composition, their white plumage echoed by the white Haqthorn blossom.
The Shepherd's hut was the obvious focal point for this painting, and I placed the sheep just off-centre, which could have been too central for balance of the composition, but the white May blossom counteracted that - and if I'd put it on the far left, it would have competed too much with the hut.
I do like painting water, especially slow-moving water, when the reflections are broken up a little by the gentle ripples from the current. To convey the distant trees, the darks are blue, and lighter than the darks in the foreground trees, which immediately pushes them into the distance, giving a sense of depth to the painting.
And here's a new Pastel I've just finished - will be framed and in the Gallery in a couple of weeks, but you can beat the rush if you want to buy it now...
This was a demo I painted a few weeks back for the Peterborough Art Society, duly finished in the studio. It's the first Pastel I've done for a year or so - similar in some respects to oils - basically you lay down the darks and work the lights back into them - the opposite of Watercolour - but Pastel is a dry (and very mucky!) medium.
