And yes, her pain score went up and down a bit
But now Jane has the tools to manage her own pain.
What Jane’s story tells me..
FIRST thing to write is..
That is a v common story.
I see this sort of result regularly in my clinic.
And these stories are real successes :)
Don’t get me wrong, joint replacement works..
And at the right time, knee replacement can be life changing.
BUT it is VERY satisfying to help keep..
People away from surgery, and
Away from the surgical knife.
SECOND, Jane’s story plays out the Cochrane evidence..
A +20% improvement in pain over 3 months.
More
here on the
evidence for moving more.
THIRD, and importantly, Jane’s story also highlights that..
The Cochrane evidence does NOT tell the whole story.
That is, Jane proves the often missed benefit of activity and exercise..
Beyond 3 months
The Cochrane evidence is impressive..
Exercise and activity are like a miracle drug.
BUT that evidence stops at 3months.
Jane kept on moving for 2 years, and more..
And kept getting benefit from exercise.
(and we don’t want to keep on taking them)
AND joint replacements, while they do work well
Can cause problems..
(albeit at low risk).
Exercise + activity keep on giving
Keep on providing benefit..
(tricky to show in a long-term study)
The evidence beyond 3mths is not really there..
(let me know if you find any)
You too can keep on benefitting beyond 3 months..
Keep moving, to do more, with less pain.
