Apply Now: Summer Manuscript Support The Arkansas INBRE Developmental Research Project Program (DRPP) is issuing a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) that would support faculty in the preparation of a manuscript for publication. The goal of this opportunity is to provide faculty protected time to write and submit a peer-reviewed manuscript.
Key points: Funding period: June 1 through July 31, 2026
Allowable expenses include up to one-month salary plus fringe benefits for the faculty member
Publication costs can be covered following acceptance of a manuscript and an invoice from the PUI to UAMS
Eligible applicants: Faculty member with an appointment at a primarily undergraduate institution in the Arkansas INBRE network Focus of the publication: An area related to human health and preference will be given to manuscripts including undergraduate students as co-authors

Now Accepting Applications: 2026 Summer Undergrad Research Fellowships. Two paid 10-week summer research fellowships are available for undergrads who are rising juniors or seniors. Students will work on a project relevant to human health led by a faculty member at either UAF or UAMS. Program runs from May 26 to July 31.

Save the Date: Annual Bench-to-Bedside Workshop. This annual one-day, in-person Workshop will be held on May 28. The target audience for this workshop is undergrads attending college/ university in Arkansas or Arkansas residents attending an out-of-state institution. Space for the workshop is limited and registration is required.

You are invited to attend the IDeA (Institutional Development Award) State Cancer Trainee Research Conference, a first-of-its-kind, cancer-focused conference supported by a National Cancer Institute R13 conference grant. Hosted by the WVU Cancer Institute, the symposium will be held April 13-15, at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place in Morgantown, WV. The 2.5-day conference will bring together graduate trainees and faculty from IDeA states to explore the 2026 theme, “The Intersection of Cancer and Metabolism.”
There is no registration fee for trainees, faculty, or other attendees. Programming includes a plenary lecture by Danny Welch, PhD (University of Kansas School of Medicine) focused on metabolism and cancer metastasis, along with research presentations and networking opportunities with faculty experts from multiple IDeA state research institutions.
Travel, registration, and lodging for trainees will be covered by the WVU Cancer Institute with support from the NCI (eligible trainees must be graduate students currently enrolled in a PhD or MS degree granting program and must submit an abstract to be eligible); faculty will cover their own travel and lodging.
Hotel Accommodations and Meals
A room block has been secured at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place, where all attendees, including trainees, can be housed. The nightly rate is $165 per night for non-trainee attendees, with check-in on April 12, and check-out on April 15.
Lodging for trainees will be fully covered by the WVU Cancer Institute and arranged directly by the conference coordinator. The trainee meeting registration also serves as a lodging reservation, so trainees should NOT book their own hotel accommodations. Faculty or other attendees can call for reservations at this number: (304) 296-1700 and use the promo code “IDeA Conference.”
Meals will be provided during conference hours, including an evening reception, for all registered attendees. |

Abstract Submission
Abstract Eligibility and Requirements You are invited to submit a 250-word abstract to the 2026 IDeA State Cancer Trainee Research Conference.
Travel, registration, and lodging for trainees will be covered by the WVU Cancer Institute with support from the NCI; trainees must submit an abstract to be eligible.
Posters and Oral Presentations will showcase and highlight the research and interests of biomedical science, clinical science, population health, behavioral science, data science, engineering, community-engaged research, or similar areas. Trainee oral presentations will be selected from the submitted abstracts by members of the Organizing Committee. Please use the link above to submit an abstract.
Submission Eligibility: Must be a currently enrolled graduate student at an institution located in an IDeA-eligible state. Work should be cancer focused or very broadly cancer relevant research including biomedical, clinical, population health, behavioral science, data science, engineering, community-engaged research, or similar. Trainees with a developing interest in cancer research are encouraged to submit their current research as an abstract. Projects may be in-progress or completed.
Abstract requirements: Title, Name and Institutional Affiliation for all co-authors (also may include Program or Center Affiliation if relevant). The body of the abstract (not including title, co-authors or affiliations) is limited to maximum length of 250 words. A confirmation email will be sent to students whose abstract is successfully submitted.
All abstracts need to be submitted by March 2. Once abstracts are submitted, guidelines around poster and oral presentations, will be sent to the trainees.

Notice of Informational Webinar on the NIGMS Institutional Biomedical Undergraduate Research Training (BURT) Program (T34). The goal of the BURT program is to strengthen research training environments and develop a pool of well-trained students who: Complete their baccalaureate degrees in biomedically-related fields, and transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs (such as PhD or MD/PhD).

Basic Experimental Studies in Humans (BESH) Will No Longer Be Considered Clinical Trials by the NIH (NOT-OD-26-032). Effective with applications submitted to due dates on or after May 25, 2026, BESH will no longer be considered clinical trials by the NIH. Going forward, BESH will not have to follow the requirements for clinical trials, including registration and reporting in ClinicalTrials.gov. More |
NIH Removing AIDS Application Due Dates from NOFOs (NOT-OD-26-029, Jan 28). Non-standard AIDS application due dates were implemented in 1988 to expedite the time to award for applications addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic within the US. NIH Pause on New Submissions to the NIH Human Embryonic Stem Cell (hESC) Registry and RFI on Reducing Reliance on Human Embryonic Stem Cells in NIH-Supported Research (NOT-OD-26-031). Given the decline in requests to NIH for new hESC line approvals, NIH is pausing its review and approval of applications for new hESC lines to be added to the NIH Human Embryonic Stem Cell Registry while it undertakes an assessment of the scientific utility of hESCs. Notice on Update to Guidance on Prompt Reporting to OLAW Under the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. (NOT-OD-25-148). The NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) has reviewed the guidance in NIH Guide Notice NOT-OD-05-034 to refine and update examples of reportable situations, examples of situations where reporting is not normally required, the time frame for reporting, and the information to be reported. NIH Requires Use of the eRA Prior Approval Module for the Submission of ALL Prior Approval Requests (NOT-OD-26-026). NIH will require that all prior approval requests be submitted in eRA Commons Prior Approval Module for all grant and cooperative agreement awards. This change will support NIH’s efforts to move toward electronic submission for all prior approval requests and streamline the submission and review process. More |

Rare Disease Day at NIH, Feb 27, aims to raise awareness about rare diseases, the people they affect and NIH collaborations that address scientific challenges and advance research for new treatments. Rare Disease Day at NIH will be held at NIH Main Campus (Natcher Conference Center) on from 9 am to 5 pm EST. There also will be a virtual livestream via NIH VideoCast with the event archived for replay afterward. The agenda will feature panel discussions, rare diseases stories, in-person exhibitors and scientific posters, and an art exhibition. The event is free and open to the public. More |
Society for Developmental Biology GetHIRED! is a 12-week course offered by the Society for Developmental Biology to help postdocs prepare materials for going on the academic job market. Course includes reading and writing assignments, as well as expert advice and stories from leaders in the field of developmental biology. National Center for Genome Resources and NM INBRE Virtual Bioinformatics Workshops Differential Expression Workshop, March 9-13, Virtual. Apply by March 2. Workshop covers basic linux skills, quality control, read alignment, abundance estimation, differential expression analysis, visualization, and pathway analysis. This advanced workshop is targeted towards undergrad or grad students in biology or related fields.
Pangenomics Workshop, March 23-27, Virtual. Apply by March 16. In this workshop, you will learn what pangenomes are, how to build a pangenome, and how to perform fundamental bioinformatic analyses to identify biological insights.
