Big news! We’re excited to formally announce that the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations have awarded funding to support our new social norms marketing campaign at Michigan State University to jumpstart motivation in civil discourse on campus.
This campaign will reach nearly all of MSU’s 50,000-plus students, correcting widespread misperceptions about what peers actually think and how open they are to dialogue.
Too often, students think others across the political spectrum are more extreme or hostile than they really are, and they can underestimate how supportive their friends are of respectful conversations.  As a result, campus norms can appear marked by weariness or suspicion, even though many students genuinely want to connect and talk across perceived differences.
In partnership with MSU’s National Social Norms Center, which has successfully shifted campus health norms for decades, we are now bringing this proven approach into the political realm.
A spring 2026 survey will identify key misperceptions, followed by a campus-wide campaign in 2026-27, delivering powerful, student-centered messages that encourage openness, interaction and dialogue.
We’re grateful for this support, and we can’t wait to get started!
Be sure to share this with people you know.
Warmly,
Ann · Dane · James
