It's hibernation season, and one of my favourite things to do in the winter (especially on the quiet days between Christmas and New Year’s) is burrow into my couch with a cup of tea, a captivating novel, and no distractions. 

The best is when I have a series to dive into, so I can stay in a story’s world for a long while, even if I’m chewing through books quickly.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced story and captivating dark fantasy world, look no further than The Luminaries trilogy. 

These three books tell one complete story arc, which takes place in Hemlock Falls: a town that isn’t on any maps, puts technology on the fritz, and is surrounded by a forest that spawns deadly nightmares when the sun sets.

Hemlock Falls is run by the Luminaries: an ancient, secret society that protects the town–and all of humanity–from the monsters that emerge from the forest. 

The story centres on 16 year-old Winnie Wednesday, who comes from a long line of Luminaries. But when we meet her in the first book, her family has been outcast and shunned for four years, ever since her dad was exposed as a witch and a traitor.

Winnie is determined to restore her family’s honour and their rightful place in Luminary society, by passing the trials to become a nightmare hunter. 

Of course, it’s not that simple: the people of Hemlock Falls and the forest surrounding it have many secrets, many of which lead back to the question of what Winnie’s dad did and why–and where he is now.
