Greetings Swimmers,
We have received many thoughtful emails and phone calls regarding air quality in Bayfield, and we want to take a moment to address your concerns directly. Many of you have been asking whether the race is being canceled or what specific air quality levels might trigger cancellation. We understand how important this event is, and we are sending this message to provide the clearest update possible, based on current conditions and what we know right now.
As of 5:00 AM this morning, Bayfield’s Air Quality Index (AQI) is approximately 174 down from 183 last night at 8 pm, which is still classified as Unhealthy. This means that everyone may experience health effects, with increased risk for individuals with asthma, heart or lung conditions, or other sensitivities. These levels are due to wildfire smoke drifting in from Canada.
We are sharing this information to help you make an informed decision about whether to participate in the race. Your safety and well-being, as well as that of our volunteers and staff, is always our highest priority.
Just as we regularly monitor lake conditions, including water temperature, wave height, visibility, and water pollution, we are also closely tracking air quality using trusted sources such as Ainow.gov, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and the National Weather Service.
That said, a final decision about the race will not be made until race day, when we will assess all conditions together, not just air quality. Our decision-making will consider the overall safety of the course and the well-being of all involved.
The forecast continues to evolve, but current trends are encouraging. Air quality is expected to improve by Saturday, with AQI levels likely returning to the Moderate range. However, individuals with underlying health conditions may remain more sensitive, even under improved conditions.
We will continue to post updates on our website as we receive them. In the meantime, if you have a heart or respiratory condition, we recommend taking extra precautions. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We remain committed to making the Point to La Pointe Swim as safe and memorable as possible for everyone involved.
Warm regards,
Ursula M. Garrison
