We Should Be DancingJosi Smit June 17 - July 29, 2023 Opening Reception June 17, 5-7PM
|
The ghosts in the walls whisper, “I can make your dreams come true… come on and dance with me.” Chiffon-draped bodies spin into moth wings. “We’re lost in music… feel so alive, I quit my 9 to 5.” A loved one glimmers across the TV glass. “Leave your cares behind… these are the good times.” Was that you?
We Should Be Dancing is an exhibition of new work by artist Josi Smit. The exhibition explores 1970s disco as a cultural movement that engaged fantasy as a way of escaping widespread social disillusionment, and as a family heritage that Smit has absorbed through stories of her mother’s dancing-queen twenties.
The artist acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council.
Our reception follows the opening event of Embassy Cultural House: Celebraring 40 Years of Cultural History at Satellite Project Space, from 2-5PM. Read more info below, and plan your Saturday around these exciting opening celebrations!
