Climbing meets art in Yangshuo, violence on cinema screens, and China’s national surfing team

I don’t know about you, but this week I feel like I just fell out of a coconut tree. Upon hearing the news about Biden dropping out of the presidential race and Kamala Harris potentially taking his place, I did the most RADII thing possible, and grabbed my phone to see how Chinese social media was reacting. It turns out the absurd synergy between Charli xcx’s album Brat and Harris hasn’t quite hit the Chinese internet yet. BUT, social media users in Shanghai are heading to Jiangwan Stadium subway station to pose with neon green pillars the same color as the Brat album cover.

Interestingly, Jiangwan Stadium itself dates back to the 1930s and is known for its unique Art-Deco-meets-Chinese-traditional architecture. It’s almost as if we exist in the context of all in which we live and what came before us!

Climbing Meets Art in Yangshuo

Rock climbing has become a popular sport in recent years, and it took to the world stage for the first time as an Olympic event at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Games. The Olympic rock climbing competition included three disciplines: speed climbing, bouldering, and lead climbing. But outdoor rock climbing offers a different sense of adventure from the climbing on artificial walls and plastic holds seen at the Olympics. While China has a healthy presence at international climbing competitions, if you’re in the country and want to try climbing outdoors, where should you head? For many rock climbers, the answer is Yangshuo, a small county close to the city of Guilin.

Now, thanks to community groups like Team Sustainable Yangshuo (永续阳朔小组), Yangshuo’s rock climbing culture is even spreading beyond the county. Last year, inspired by a performance by the extreme sport artist group The Flying Frenchies, Flupke (Xiaojuan 小卷), a Yangshuo local and owner of Demo Bistro, conceived the idea of suspending a rock band from a cliff.
