We're just over two weeks away from Asia’s premier CALL event — JALTCALL2025! In this edition of JALTCALL News, we’re spotlighting what’s in store for this year’s conference in Tokyo. From exciting sessions and hands-on workshops to networking opportunities and innovative research, there’s plenty to look forward to. Whether you're presenting, attending, or still thinking about registering, this issue has the details you need to get ready.

1. JALTCALL2025 Conference Details
JALTCALL 2025 is scheduled for July 18–20 at Tokyo University of Science, Katsushika Campus. This year's theme, CALL for All, highlights how all language teachers have become CALL practitioners amid recent advances in AI and digital education.
Conference Theme
Following the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent AI boom, language teachers have all in effect now become CALL practitioners. The 2025 conference theme, CALL for All, recognises this new reality in the educational profession. JALTCALL strives to continue developing and expanding CALL as a discipline that benefits all language learners, and our annual conference aims to provide valuable opportunities for teachers, researchers, and other stakeholders in CALL to present their work, to exchange ideas, and to make meaningful new connections.
We have a fantastic program of presentations, workshops, panel sessions, and keynotes lined up with a diverse range of CALL-related topics at this year's conference: Artificial intelligence (AI) in CALL Technology-mediated Feedback and Evaluation Digital game-based language learning and teaching (DGBLLT) Ethics in CALL practice Extended reality (XR) in CALL (this includes virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR)) Learner motivation and CALL Second language acquisition (SLA) theory and CALL Teacher and learner experiences of CALL Virtual exchange And more!

2. Keynote Speakers Preview
We are proud to announce our keynote speakers for JALTCALL 2025, Dr. Mathias Schulze of San Diego State University and Dr. Glenn Stockwell from Waseda University!
Dr. Mathias Schulze - Language Learning with GenAI: Bridging the Gap or Burning the Bridge
Mat is a professor of German (Applied Linguistics) and Comparative International Studies at San Diego State University. By training, he is a teacher of German and Russian. Later, he earned his PhD with the dissertation “Textana – Grammar and grammar checking in parser- based CALL” at the Centre for Computational Linguistics at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. Mat has conducted research on the intersection of artificial intelligence and language education for thirty years. His research on AI and CALL, grammar learning, online language courses, and societal bilingualism has been published widely in books and articles. Dr. Glenn Stockwell - Learning to Tame the Tiger: Self-Directed Professional Development in Language Teaching with Artificial Intelligence
Glenn Stockwell (PhD, University of Queensland) is Professor of Applied Linguistics at the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies, Waseda University. He is author of Mobile Assisted Language Learning: Concepts, Contexts and Challenges (Cambridge University Press, 2022) and editor of The Cambridge Handbook of Technology in Language Teaching and Learning (Cambridge University Press, 2025) and Computer Assisted Language Learning: Diversity in Research and Practice (Cambridge University Press, 2012). He is Editor-in-Chief of Computer Assisted Language Learning and the Australian Journal of Applied Linguistics. His current research interests include the impact of technology on teaching and learning, professional development in using technology for language teaching, artificial intelligence in language education, teacher and learner training with technology, and the development of learner autonomy.

4. Special JALTCALL Podcast - Keynote speaker Mathias Schulze
This episode is a conference special edition featuring keynote speaker Mathias Schulze of San Diego State University. In this episode, 2025 conference chair Michael Hofmeyr interviews Mat about his thoughts and ideas on a host of topics related to his keynote speech at the JALTCALL 2025 Conference.

5. Annual General Meeting Info
The upcoming conference also means it’s time for the JALTCALL annual general meeting (AGM), our yearly business meeting in which we discuss our activities over the past year, review the budget, elect officers, and vote on other important matters.
This year, the AGM will be held from 1:00 PM on Sunday, July 20 at the conference venue. Attendance at the AGM is free for everyone, and does not require participation in the conference or even being a JALT member. However, only current members of JALTCALL will be permitted to cast votes. The meeting will also allow online participation via Zoom:

Attending the AGM is a great place to start if you want to get more involved in JALTCALL. Regardless of your background, interests, or skill set, there's a way for you to help make JALTCALL better.
