Last week, meteorologists across the country were sounding the alarm. Forecast models pointed toward a potential Class 4/5 wind event, the kind that gets everyone’s attention quickly. And then it didn’t materialize the way many expected. What we ended up with was far less severe. An EF1 tornado in Charlotte, some scattered impacts, but nothing close to the widespread damage that had been projected. Depending on who you ask, the reasons vary. Some point to funding gaps in agencies like NOAA, others to broader issues in forecasting interpretation and public understanding. The reality is that it's better to be prepared than to be caught off guard.

 

Grounded Boots Relief treated the forecast seriously. We began preparing for potential deployment. Volunteers were put on alert, gear was checked, and conversations started early. Plans were reviewed with the understanding that nothing moves until impact justifies it.  

So when the storm underdelivered, we stood down. No trucks rolled out, no trailers hit the road, no chainsaws fired up in the field. Readiness without reckless action is what builds trust with both the communities we serve and the partners we work alongside. Knowing when not to deploy is just as important as knowing when to go.

 

What this became instead was something just as valuable: An exercise. With the organization currently working to put everything onto paper, this served as a real time stress test for our systems. Preparedness lists were revisited, communication flows were evaluated, and assumptions were challenged. What do we actually need ready? What can wait? What did we miss? Where can we be sharper? These are questions best answered before a real deployment, not during one.

 

This one ended quietly, and that is a good outcome. But the next one may not. The work done during these “nothing happened” moments is what determines how effective we are when something does. Prepared, not reactive. Ready, not reckless. That is the standard we are building toward.

We are launching a monthly Open Forum for the public, volunteers, and leadership to come together in one place.

 

The goal is to create space for genuine conversation. This is where questions get answered, ideas get shared, concerns are addressed, and people can get a clearer understanding of how Grounded Boots Relief operates. It is also an opportunity for those interested in getting involved to find their lane, whether that is in the field, behind the scenes, or somewhere in between.

 

These conversations help build trust, strengthen alignment, and ensure we are not just growing, but growing in the right direction. Transparency is not a buzzword for us; it is a practice.

 

Barring major holidays, the Open Forum will take place at 6pm on the first Monday of every month in our Discord server. If you are even remotely interested in the organization, you are encouraged to join us.

 

 Meteorologists walk a constant tightrope. Issue too many warnings and people ignore them. Issue too few and tornadoes go unwarned. The goal is not zero false alarms; it is the right balance between accuracy and early warning.

CPR/Stop the Bleed Training: April 25 (tentative)

  

My office has quietly become what I call the No Echo Chamber room. Encouragement is appreciated, but it is not what sharpens an organization. I am far more interested in the conversations that challenge how I think about Grounded Boots Relief. There are still plenty of questions I do not have answers to. But each day, those answers come into focus a little more.

 

Right now, everything is being put into writing. The volunteer handbook, role descriptions, expectations, bylaws, grant proposals. All of it is under the knife and being rebuilt to match where the organization actually is, not where it started. I was told recently that a nonprofit without direction is just paperwork. That stuck with me. If I cannot clearly explain what we are and what we do, even to people who already know us, then we are not as dialed in as we need to be.

 

On another front, I am beginning conversations with local colleges about work study programs. Federally funded students filling necessary roles within the organization. There are positions that would benefit from consistent support, even if only for a season. I am cautiously optimistic about what that could become. It is another example of inviting people into the room who know more than I do in specific areas, not just people who agree with me.

 

The past couple of weeks have been heavy on those kinds of conversations. The kind that break down your assumptions and force you to rebuild with more intention. For the most part, we have been on the right track. But sustainability is the real challenge. How do we continue operating, grow our capabilities with each response, and maintain our Long Term Recovery work at the same time?

 

We are gaining momentum. The destination is not fully defined yet. But I am confident in the direction, and I am excited about where Grounded Boots Relief is headed.
