Next time you're in New Harmony, consider catching one of our daily tours! In the morning, we offer 45-minute tours onboard our tram that give you an overview of the town without having to step out of the vehicle. "Tour like a local" while an interpreter points out interesting places to visit, eat, and shop while also sharing stories about our local history. In the afternoon, we take a more in-depth look at New Harmony with our 2-hour history tour. Join one of our interpreters in exploring several historic sites and learning more about the Harmonists, the Owen/Maclure community, and what came afterwards in New Harmony's history. This tour travels between sites via our tram and can be an easier option than walking tours for many visitors. All Historic New Harmony tours start at the Atheneum Visitors Center. Tours include an orientation film and Atheneum exhibits. We can also customize our tours for a group's interest and schedule. Guided walking tours are available as well as "step-on" tours for groups on tour buses. Contact David Angel at dwangel@usi.edu or 812-682-4488 for questions about scheduling group tours and discounted group rates.

Suppose you are only in New Harmony for a short time and want to get a feel for the community. What do you do? One answer is to watch our 12-minute orientation film, Utopia: The New Harmony Experience, at the Atheneum Visitors Center.
Utopia: The New Harmony Experience provides an introduction to New Harmony through visuals, archival materials, and interviews with town residents, business owners, and University of Southern Indiana faculty. Though the film touches lightly on the 200+ year history of New Harmony (save that for our 1 p.m. history tour!), you will come away with a sense of the community's unique vibe.
Free showings take place in the Clowes Theater at the Atheneum as requested and before tours.
|
Funding for Utopia: The New Harmony Experience came from the Provost's Office at the University of Southern Indiana. Blackstrap Media of Evansville, Indiana, produced the film.
